View Full Version : My first Maya 3D rendered scene
Yakuza
December 18th, 2006, 06:56 AM
After attending 2 weeks Maya course in my hometown...I've made this.
I don't expect myself to make it really realistic since the time frame is short when I'm doing this assignment but anyway...here ya go's...
(Updated)
Here is the final production version: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/45042217/
This is the old original crap and basically u can just ignore it:

nice to see ya back. Oo, you should do a render pass in mental ray and do some caustics for the bottles, and some reflections with raytraciiiing.
Did ya use bodypaint?

woah! Looks awesome for a first render. My first renders were just boxes with different textures or simple chairs and stuff made by primitives :D

Yo dark...I heard about the mental ray but my teacher just haven't had any chance to talk about those 2 weeks, but I've made a go before, it looks awful without any settings...I'll guess I take another go tomorrow. It is really hard do 3D projects since I'm back in my homecountry with my crappy graphiccardless computer. The only chance I can make my thingy is in the school which is considered crap to.
I did put ray tracing into my bottles. And no, I haven't use bodypaint, besides, I don't even know what program was that.

Awsome work for the first go, well done.
The only thing at first glance would be the bins... they look like that are made out of concrete and not steel. Maybe have a play adjusting them.

Much better than anything I could do - which I can't do jack in 3D - but that's not to say that's not one helluva stab at a first render. Good stuff! :thumb:

Tone down the bottles overall shine/Gloss and the cans a little. Darken and take down shine on the door handle. Roofing panel with building needs some work joining.
Near the cone is that a curb? if not take some time and add a nice curb into it to add more to the enviroment.
nice work.

Nice for a first image but it lacks surface depth; it looks like an in-game render.
If you're looking for crits:
You should tone down the bumpmaps on the bins, decrease brightness on most objects and make sure your texture are scaled correctly (I see really fine bumpmap detail on the door but coarse image/bump on the wall)
Again, it's really good for a first render and I'm sure you'll be progressing at an incredible speed...

yeah nice work! Great start!
To add to what others have said, something i saw straight away would be the bottles stick out too much, like Templarian mentioned tone down the shine/gloss of the texture, you may also need to mess some up (break, rip labels half off) since the scene is 'dirty' the bottle look way too clean.

Well the only thing you have to learn with mentalray to get kick started is "final gather", "caustics","hdri lighting", and "global illumination". After you figure out how to use them all, you can tweak and experiment and get some sweeet results.
I'm gonna have to learn to use renderman (by pixar), cause it look soo awesome :D

I actually thought out of everything in the image - the bat looked out of place and not as good as everything else ...

Thnx for all the comments and crits...I'll play around again when I goto school today. The roof looks a bit wrong was due to the backlight (If I switch off the backlight looks fine but the rest looks crap) I'll see what I can do. I'll try to turn down the gloss for the bottle and the bump for the bin.
Yeah, my teacher actually criticize my bat looks strange, well...I think is the color problem, it suppose to be am aluminum bat instead of wood, thats why it shines so much, but I'll play around and see.

Looks fantastic.
Are those bricks from 3d Cafe? I think I use em too :P

Looks great for a first attempt. The only thing that strikes me is that the scaling seems off. The door looks too short in relation to the baseball bat, garbage cans, etc.

awesome first render, how long did it take?:)
the baseball bat does look a bit flat though, trash bins do look like concrete. very detailed to say the least. grungy;)
me likey:)

Throw some global illumination in to soften it out :D

Err...nope...I got the bricks from the 3dtrainer instead...lol, and of course I've added up tons of crap on it, too. I bet you didn't have the graffiti and erosion cement on ur bricks.
I did some correction today, the bin is no longer made from silver concrete, the bottle looks better since it doesn't reflect like a mirror, no more crappy backlight for the roof, added some dust effect(well, just normal spotlight fog...damn took me 1 and a half hour to render this time) and the bat doesn't shine as much as before. In my opinion it looks a bit better.
As the size looks a bit wrong, I'll say is the problem of perspective. The side and front view actually looks fine, but in perspective view, the door seems to look a bit small due to the angle.
And I wonder where my USB is...damn I left at school again...:( I'll post deviant tomorrow and see how u guys feel. I didn't do any mental ray since I need to get on to my next project in ASAP, I think I'll leave the best at the last...

what i see as the biggest flaw is the fact that you are making your textures either really smooth or really grungy. if you are looking for a more realistic feel i would try to work that out. considering this is your first one, that is very good though....or atleast to someone who doesnt even use the program.

Yeah, I've fixed my silver concrete bin and the over glossed bottles, fogged dust and better lighting. I'll upload to deviant art tonight.
I'll edit this post after I've uploaded

Nice :)
It's not photoreal - more cartoony. But it's very detailed and looks quite professionally done :D Love the textures. You really should try VRay. Just replace your lights with VRay lights, switch on GI and it'll look 10x better.
Brick and ground textures look very low-res, too...

Hmm...VRay, nvr heard of it...it'll check it out on my next assignment...
Brick and ground suppose to be really high res(4meg TGA file), maybe my model is a bit big. BTW...I also add a layer of softlight blur in photoshop, maybe thats the reason.
