Hello everyone.

For the last few months now I have been busy teaching myself Flash. I have gone through some of the Lynda.com tutorials, Cartoonsmart Tutorials, and online courses offered through my alma mater and company. I've parsed through some books on the subject as well. Over these last few months I have become acquainted with the Flash drawing tools, interface, and recently I have begun looking at ActionScript 2.0.

My question is where are the "hot" areas now in Flash development? What are the most in demand positions relating to Flash?

I am thinking of switching careers (I am currently an Electrical Engineer) and was wondering what transition would be the least disruptive to me and my family (by that I mean keeping around the same standard of living, etc). I understand I will probably make less starting out but I also dont want to try to support a family on 20K a year.

Also what are the outlooks on job growth/stability within the Flash industry?

Thanks guys.

your best bet is to learn AS and learn it well. Usually flash developer jobs are the highest paying usually 60k + a year. For this you will need to have experience with flash integration with XML, Databases, PHP and ASP. In addition you'll need to know best design practices and have a thorough understanding of the different web browsers so you can design sites that are cross browser capable. In addition you will almost certainly need a strong understanding of XHTML, CSS and JavaScript.

Look around at craigs list, monster and other sites for ideas on what companies in your area are looking for. In addition, if you're in the US you can check out salary.com to see what Flash developer's in your area are making.

Also, just a note, you're going to want a good understanding of Adobe AE as well as emulating 3D via AS in Flash. You'll also want a thorough understanding of animating through AS in flash and know best practices around file setup. (.fla)
