Hey alex - yeah I heard about it. I don't think this is a terrorist attack. This happened almost 10 years after a similar bombing incident involving Ted Kaczynski (see article).

oh. sorry, i mean that it's not like the US hasn't been involved in any bad stuff before. hence my example with japan. japan bombs pearl harbor, a military base, and the US retaliates by dropping the A bomb on them. a little excessive, don't you think?

Yeah - a terrorist would have more likely wanted to take out as many lives as possible. We glorify our situation just as much as any other country would - esp when this is eerily similar to something that *could* be terrorist related. As an alternative to the A-bomb, would you prefer a long and dangerous hand-to-hand battle instead pinx? In a war a country does what it needs to protect the lives of its own troops. War isn't fun, fair, or friendly :(

Now, if 50 years from now, we are jingoing chants of 9/11 for something such as a local gas station robbery, there may be a problem!

Cheers!

You make a good point, but 1945 Japan was given many chances to surrender before the bombs were dropped. They even refused to surrender after the first bomb was dropped.

If USA hadn't dropped the bombs, it is argued that Japan would have fought to the last standing man.

Someone was going to use the technology, in order to prove it's power, it's was the US's choice to step up and make the statement. Whether right or wrong.

no of course i wouldn't prefer a long dangerous hand to hand battle, but i also don't prefer annihilating thousands of families. by any side, mind you. this stupid kind of patriotism and nationalism really really pisses me off. anyone who knows me will know that i will not watch the movie "pearl harbor" until they make a blockbuster about the US dropping the A bomb (TWICE) on Japan.

so what would be your alternative?

Just complaining about how it happened does nothing but make you sound bitter.

BTW - I wasn't being patriotic. I have done extensive research into WW2 (my father is a huge WW2 buff, and it gives us something to talk about), and these were my views on the subject.

but I am interested to hear your alternative to the two options you didn't prefer above.

rev: as someone whose country was in war for over four years, i know that war is stupid and that innocent people are going to get killed. japan probably would have fought till the end. it's hard to say what was right and what was wrong, you're right about that.

i don't know, maybe as a pacifist that i am, i get mad when people get so war hungry. like bush, for example.

rev, i wasn't saying you were being patriotic. patriotism is ok as long as it isn't taken too far, which is happening right now as we speak. it happened in croatia too when the war started there, overnight, everything was "croatia is the best".

i also like history in general and knowing what went on. unfortunately schools don't do a great job here, so it's up to me to read and watch the history channel and such about different world events.

as far as an alternative, to tell you the truth, i have no idea. maybe that's why i'm not a politician. :P

Stupid kind of partiotism? I mean no offence by this statement (although you will take it that way)

I and many others are patriotic because I was born and bred in this nation. I have been truly blessed to reside on this incredible chunk of land. I am given all of the opportunity in the world just because I live here. I have countless friends and family members that risk, have risked and others lost thier lived defending this nation. Perhaps you should give it a few more years being off the boat before you understand the TRUE meaning of American patriotism.

Regardless, I do agree with Pearl Harbor being crappy because it did not thouroughly explain the dropping of the bombs. However, historically, the saturation bombin in the the movie did occur first.

Phil, i was talking with my mom about it and she was saying how she too thought it was a student. I think so cause it was in a small room, small bomb, and it was unocupied so no one was hurt. Most-likely just some kid who wanted to get out of exams for the rest of the year or was just doing a prank. Either way it is something that should, and is, being taken care of. But when you look at everything, there is no way it was a terroist.

for your information, i have been here seven years and just became a citizen. i have been told to "go back to where i came from" by those so called overly (the key word in this argument) patriotic citizens. america is a great country, but it's not perfect (and neither is any other country) and in my opinion shouldn't be thought of as that. but i'm the foreigner, so how would i know, right? i've only lived in croatia, kuwait, and the US but i really don't know what i'm talking about (in case your well bred american mind has problems understanding, i'm being sarcastic).

Woah , Whoah...woah..
Cmon, no flame war..

Both of you have a good point, patriotism is important to make sure a nation works toghether not against each other. But yes, it can be take too far, and in history it has been many times (Nazi Germany, Italy) But honestly you cant define "what its really like to have american patriotism" You can begin to understand it, and I think that it requires to take a step back, and judge it from another countries point of view. Because when someone says "I hate that this country has this and thats" can be patriotic, because what is wrong with exposing the countries flaws to make it a better place than it is.

I whole heartedly aggree with Pinx on one part , when people tell me to go back to my country, I get angry.... Thats is such a blatantly racist statment that I want to stab them with a spoon! While yes, you must have respect for the country your in, you must not be on your knees for it. We must remember we live in a world society not on our own planet and we must understand our diffrences and live together not appart...

My two cents...

RB.

(Sorry Kit :) ) No probs. :) A lot of modern Americans (I know that's a generalisation) are descended from the British settlers... :P

Besides, we're encouraged not to think about the time when the UK had the Empire. We're taught to think that this was a very bad thing and we were all very uncivilised. In fact, we're barely taught about it at all, even though it's an important part of our country's history. :sigh:

russian: yeah they touch on all the aspects of WW2 but they don't really (they do a little bit, but not too much) go indepth on what led to the events, etc. that's why i like college, you can take a history class and get more out of it than you ever did in 4 years of high school. :P

also, i don't appreciate it when someone says that i'm "fresh off the boat", i take that as a insult and won't tolerate such insults.

but i do agree with you on all your points and that all these points should not be taken too far.

I dont care how long you have been here or anywhere else for that matter. Did you not a few weeks back pledge your allegience to this country? I thought so. Why dont you act on the words you were so quick to utter. Spend some of that time pissing and moaning doing something constructive.

That right there is the reason Mods get upset with you.

You don't care about rules of conduct, or anyone else's feelings when you feel insulted. Get a thicker skin, don't tell people to * off, or * up, or anything else!

If you truly don't care, then log out, and don't come back.
