A BABY girl was bitten to death by ANTS as she took a lunchtime nap at her babysitter’s home.
Rebecca Ramirez had settled three-month-old Autumn White into a cot and checked 30 minutes later when she heard crying.
She found black ants — one-eighth of an inch long — swarming all over the gasping child.
Rebecca called paramedics and firefighters but Autumn stopped breathing before they arrived.
She was rushed to hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, where doctors found she was covered in hundreds of ant bites on her legs and had a swollen throat.
Detective Tony Morales said the incident was being treated as a freak accident.
He added: “A child that age probably just couldn’t take the venom. These ants have a nasty bite.”
The bugs crawled in through a gap in the floor of the home in the posh suburbs of south-west Phoenix.
Babysitter Rebecca was taken to hospital and treated for shock — as were the baby’s parents, Aileen and Jerry.
Medics believe Autumn had an allergic reaction sparked by the venom, which does not usually seriously affect humans.
Fire crews exterminated the colony infesting Autumn’s home.
Neighbours said there had been an “explosion” in the number of ants in the area after temperatures surged recently.
Lorena Nieto, 26, said she was guarding her own 14-month-old son, fearing a repeat attack. She added: “It’s scary.”
Deadly ant attacks are extremely rare, doctors said. Symptoms of anaphylactic reaction include swelling of the lips, throat, ears and eyelids.
Stings from bees and wasps are the most common cause.
Without treatment, they can cause death in under an hour.
The Sun’s doctor, Carol Cooper, said:
It can take many ant bites to cause a reaction. This is a heartbreaking incident.”
