tags? Might be fun to implement, and will probably get pretty high use. Rather than telling someone to google it (on google, google says I must say).. [google]searchterm might provide a box with the dyanmic top 5 results, or an iframe, or perhaps it'd save the top 5 results once and put 'em in a box. Of course it'd give a link to the google search page as well.

I can instead create a generic search tag that provides links to Google, Yahoo, and Live. The problem with an iframe is that the results will be too constrained by the narrow width.

so kirupa is it going to be something like this.?
[g]something[/g[
and the result would be
something (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=something&btnG=Google+Search)

Yeah, iFrame definitely was far from my preference. I was thinking more along the lines of actually displaying the results. It wouldn't be that big of a challenge either if you use Flash or regular images.

I think Iframe would be a good idea.

I created tag that displays links to the major search engines plus wikipedia for search term links:
[search]kirupa
Here is a link on how to use it: http://www.kirupa.com/forum/misc.php?do=bbcode#search

Cool, I didn't think it was possible to do this much with the tags.

kirupa
November 3rd, 2006, 10:58 PM
Oh no, you can do a lot with tags really easily. This was a really useful feature, so I didn't feel like providing an excuse like I do with most of the tag suggestions that get posted here :P

Yeah the sencon thing works but it is crazy to figure out. There has to be an easier way than what they did there. The bubble buttons is the one that works well. Like I said before there has to be an easier way.

You'd ask Kirupa to make a tag of course.

One would think I would remember to put this site's search thing also! I added it to the tag :P

What about having a kirupa.com search and underneath it a kirupaforum search and THEN under that is google, live, etc

kirupa
November 7th, 2006, 10:41 PM
It is a lot easier to change the value passed in as a parameter in the URL itself. For the forums, the data is actually being handled server-side. I have no way of extracting the search terms by looking at the URL alone :(

Suggestion, maybe the Wikipedia link should do a search in Wikipedia rather than directly linking to an article, since, unless the article name matches the search term exactly, you'll get a "Wikipedia does not have an article with this exact name." page.

Great suggestion! I have fixed the wikipedia link to search instead :)

I think it would be cool if you wrote it so that instead of just displaying links, it would also display like the first one or two results in a little window on the mouse-over of each one, now that, would be really cool. :P

That would be pointlessly complex. Insetad, add [css-d].

or even better, [d-css]
