This is a mad idea but I love it, basically the colour of elements are determined by time, the older they get they fade, much like the ageing process.
You have to read about his thought process before you pass judgement, this is true innovation IMO.

concept is cool... site not so pretty though. Says not to judge a book by it's cover... but the majority of the public does. The only reason his header works is cause he's Shaun Inman... if it was joeschmoe.com and it said that someone would close it out right away. The fact that he has an 80px header that screams DON'T CLOSE ME! says a lot IMO.

the programmer geek in me is happy about the dynamic color changing -
the developer and designer in me says "goodbye usability" - hello huge disclaimer that makes me want to close the window - looks amateurish - he could have executed this system a lot better.

Simplistik/PR I think thats because people will automatically judge it on whatever merits and not on the basis of his thought process, a lot of design has to be understood to be apreciated properly, esp pure design, and it is a personal site after all, the post where he announces it goes a long way to explain things and thats it's a work in progress, esp in his replys to comments, It could be executed a little better, and the main font is helv neue, so windows users will get the rough end of the stick if they dont have it installed.
It's nice that one of the most established mouthpieces out there is taking a lovely site, ditching it and basically sticking 2 fingers up and doing things his own way, thats why I like it so much.

It's nice that one of the most established mouthpieces out there is taking a lovely site, ditching it and basically sticking 2 fingers up and doing things his own way, thats why I like it so much.Of course they'll judge it on the cover, and then they'll leave it. Just as I said if it wasn't for the fact that he is who he is... that statement about, my site may not look good but it sure does function nifty... would do absolutely NOTHING for someone else, or someone less "established".
Doing things his own way? People make ugly sites on a daily basis. I'm not saying that site is an eyesore either. I can appriciate the functionality of it of course, I actually think it's semi-brilliant, but the functionality doesn't make up for the lack of visual stimulation. Which goes back to my first my point, it's not as visually appealing as his others.
A site is much like an ad, or any other marketing tool. Not many people care about the fine print, all they want to see are pretty pictures, and a half naked chic... ok maybe that's just me :P and then they'll worry about all that other crap later.

now why couldnt he put his best designer foot forward, along with this functionality. Personally I find the site apalling. And only the inner geek in us can respect what he is trying. But to the general public the rest will fall on deaf ears. For the simple fact you have to place a giant disclaimer on the front goes to show how much a failure the site is on its own.
I think the dude is trying to ride the merits of his own name on this one. Had this been some new member that posted this with or without the disclaimer we would be bashing the hell out of him.....Not lubing him up (catch my drift)

He explains in a comment that the emphasis is on the type, readability, and wants to move away from images, he also said it's a personal site and does not care hence the disclaimer so people don't look and close, but rather understand, then look and close, ya gotta love the mans ego :P
Your correct if it were anyone else it would be lambasted, but it is a personal site and this is where the rules for normal site design go out the window, if a designer handed me that for a commercial work my foot would be travelling at a serious rate towards his or hers arse.
I think I'm thinking about this too much, but I'm a sucker for proper typography and the thought that goes into it and this floats my boat. (tho I am also partial to the half naked chicks myself :) )

here's what will happen with this version:
1) geeks will love it when they first visit because it's shaun inman and it's new
2) it will be posted on your major css sites like cssvault, cssbeauty, cssmania, etc.
3) no one will visit again because it's hideous
4) inman will keep this version for about 8 months, realizing it was a huge mistake because his traffic has dropped off significantly.
5) he will release a new version. repeat step 1, 2, but hopefully not 3.

While I admire his work and the concept behind the redesign, I am not sure how he wants to market himself this time. Maybe he just wants to promote "finesse programming" - as what this color concept might be seen - that could turn out to be far more profitable.
On other thoughts - "Less Web 2.0. More like Web Two-point-No." makes me even happier :)

The changing colours are hardly a revolution. He should have focused on design as well as developing his idea. It's just ugly imho.
Sean Inman sucks.

I've used a similiar concept for comments in the past. :D
The concept is good, but it's impossible to differentiate most any of the pages on my Dell monitor (easy on my Mac). Not too fond of the fonts being massive (tried that, too, and failed :P). It immediately reminded me of stopdesign.
Meh, it's cool, I guess.

I miss his old site. dude is really talented and he has great aesthetic for a developer /// this new site while cool in concept really misses the mark on design. my 2 cents.

Inman's something. This site doesn't fit my taste either and like everyone said, it could have been better executed with this cool concept. But it'll work for him. Remember the whole Mint business? Huge success for him because of all the hype. This is the same. If you read his post on his redesign, you'll notice he's already talking about his new "platform." Expect to see screenshots / hype on that on Mike D.'s blog in a few months.

I'm starting to like it more and more as I look at it… the fonts are beautiful. (I don't think Windows users see the font, though.)

RSS feed with an alphafading with every new post... As you can see, this is post 118 as of today 24th of october - and the guy doesn't post every day, so I would hardly call Inman's concept "new"... (and it's easily made with a Flash + XML combo... - check out the RSS feed if you like)
Cheers all...

Well, that's similar, but I seriously doubt almost anybody has seen that little French blog. Meh, it was original in both cases.

Inmans concept is really not original. It just seems that way because he is int he limelight of our industry. Still think the whole site stinks in general.

That "little French" blogger is one of the most famous cartoonist in France... Check out the index of his website, he is extremely prolific... Actually, I would bet my left nut that on an absolute number basis, more people have heard of Trondheim than of Inman... :)
Anyhoo, that doesn't make Inman's site pretty or awe-inspiring or anything, imho.
Cheers.

i think it's a little crazy that he spent so much time on function and creating a semi-innovative way to organize his blogging but it's not really an excuse for poor design.
his old sites are gorgeous and for this new one it seems that he's done everything in his power to make the fonts huge for no reason and the entire site a little hard to follow. with all those bigass words there are no sections that call attention, it's just one big jumble.
2 cents by haam.
