its really ugly. the glow on the outised of the bars is ugly and it looks really weird cuz the bars go out into the backgorund. scrap it and start again

Haha its not totaly terrible but it definetly can be refined quite a bit. I was the same way when I first started designing. And laying effect on top of effect. Just always keep in mind that less is more. Even if your still overzealous when designing, if you keep reminding yourself that less is more you'll maybe find a balance. Go easy on the eyes. Looking at it with the outerglow and the beveling and the bright green with the gradient is a bit of a sensory overload.

Hope this helped.

Yeah, it needs some work. Keep practicing and putting stuff up on Kurpa for comments, and also browse other peoples websties pick out what you like.

PS: MSCave, that's a mighty tall footer.

Hi.

I think your problem is is that you've got excited using all those filters.

Chill with the filters, baby and pay more attention to the actual design.

What about this? I tried to make it simple but nice looking if you know what I mean.

Na
Rounded rectangles: Gotta go.
Colour/Gradient: Gotta go.
Kiddie font: Gotta go.

Have a look around the web and see what you like and then try and build something inspired by that. :)

Keep that one for when you need to make a webpage for a two year old. :thumb:

Yeah I see you cut down on some of the filters which is good but it looks almost cartoonish. Like Anogar said, great for a kids website but doesnt look very professional if thats what your going for. Keep at it, youre getting there.

P.S. Yeah I guess my footer is a little tall. I just wanted to throw something up there for the time being since I'm a noob. (That word sounds so dirty to me)

The only thing that really says "this is a kids website" is that font, true the colours are a little juvenile but if you added a better font I think that would help a lot.

I actually think the second design you did is a VAST improvement on the 2nd, I was surprised. So I don't think you should give up. I don't mind the rounded corners on the outside of the layout and perhaps the inner/top banner but I think square edges would do better on the navigation to balance things out. And a different font would also balance it out. I think you went for a more rounded theme, but it needs to be toned down and squaring out 1 or 2 elements and straightening up the font might be best. Also the blue on the background is a bit harsh/strong, try toning it down a bit.

definately don't give, design aesthetics, just like everything else in life takes time to learn. Look around for tutorials to help move you in the right direction. Look through magazine ads, film credits, cd covers etc for inspiration. See what other people are doing, don't copy them, but look at them for ideas. Also check out color theory a bit as that can help immensely as well...
