Lately I've seen a lot of Blogs that are powered by Wordpress...
I looked into it a bit and found out that it is based on PHP ad mySql.
I'm considering getting it and learning, but not because I want a blog, but because it seems like it could be used as a CMS (content management system.)
My question is this:
Do any of you have any experience with Wordpress and do you think its abilities could be applied in a much more universal way, or is it just good for blogs and useless for everything else.
Any advise greatly appreciated!

It is okay, I dont think it is all that. I just did a WP blog for a race team..Actually still working on it. But skinning WP can be a pain in the arse. There are lots of plugins for it. I basically went with it because it is easy to maintain for the client. So to me its a trade off. More pain for the designer, less pain and learning curve for the client. SOme others like Joomla are overkill for small sites. I would take a look at text-pattern as well.
Here is the WP I am working on...http://www.philpottracing.com/ Client managed to mess it up already....

It's pretty cool. It can be used for more than just a blog, heres an example.

Some features included in the newest wordpress are:
Passworded Pages
Pages in general
Categories
Search Functionality
and in some themes a Calendar

Wordpress is alright, but I prefer Movable Type because it generated static pages, if you want to skin it don't use the default template, switch it to the classic template and work that, the html is completly striped down and prepped for you with that.
