Starting today Google's offer for free private-labeled email accounts gets out of beta, bundled with a few other applications:

i don't think this has much big business or individual appeal, but web designers might actually find this useful when dealing with small clients. let's say you walk the client through buying a domain and hosting. of course they want an email contact@clientname.com. rather than hooking their email client up or teaching them horde, squirrel, whatever, you can hook them up to gmail - which they might already use and be familiar with. it might also bring down the hosting requirements and thus could be cheaper for them.

overall, i'm not sold. but this is one application i think it could be used for.
