Hi all,
With Vista not long to come and it reliant on Directx 10 by design what the hech is M$ thinking? For instance there isn't a single graphics card out now and won't be for months that can handle 10. I know Vista will run with 9x which will ship with it but how compromised will the graphics be? I think lots of people are thinking if they see "Vista Ready" they won't know that comes with all kinds of major idiotic caveats.

Could you explain what you mean by "how compromised the graphics be?"
Vista Ready or Vista Premium branding do not specify DirectX10 as a requirement: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/capable.mspx
In other words, if you have a DirectX10 graphics card, Vista will look just the same as it would on a DirectX9 card. Games, though, if designed for DX10 will look nicer such as the Flight Simulator X screenshots posted earlier.

Tablets' main thing is the tablet-like feature where you can write to your screen. They aren't normally known for their performance. You already pay an arm and part of a leg for a normal tablet anyway! :rambo:

The OS is built to run with DX9L and DX10 so you shouldn't have to care a whole lot. I mean kirupa's running it and his specs arn't that revolutionary. He also doesn't complain about it from what i've seen.
Still got a while for the DX10 vid cards so Microsoft is right on schedual. No reason to use Vista until they start rolling out the newer games (the software wont use DX10 for a long time... probably 3d programs will be the first software to use it).
Can't wait but i'm not using it till I get a my faster stuff for DX10 gaming.

I see Kirupa, but in that article it reads "Some features available in the premium editions of Windows Vista—like the new Windows Aero user experience—may require advanced or additional hardware." I'd take that to mean just what it says with regards to 10-designed hardware.

^Yes exactly. Just like with the games their are DX10 filters that arn't shown if the card isn't DX10. You can still use it though so theres no point to worry... and it probably won't make a large difference.

By additional hardware or features, I am guessing they are referring both to the amount of video ram as well as requiring a TV tuner to use the TV-watching capabilities.
AFAIK know, the Aero Glass effect shouldn't matter whether the user is running DX9 or DX10.

I, for one, really appreciate what Microsoft is doing. And that is pushing the market's hardware limits, especially graphics cards. Right now, most computers and laptops come with pretty crappy (and sometimes no) graphics cards. Vista will definitely push those vendors into installing some of that good stuff.

Kirupa or anyone, I'd be interested to know for sure, can you determine it? :)

We don't have a DX10 card to test it you know that... (if you don't then... well we don't have a DX10 card to test it). Kirupas running Aero on Vista (im running it but its just a haxor to xp).

I know there's no DX10 cards out. More specifically my question was if Kirupa or anyone was certain DX9 would run the full aero glass UI given that the graphics card supported all 9x etc. :)

Its just a theme... why does it matter so much if a simple motion blur or effect is missing would you even notice. There probably isnt anything special that is different between the two except that DX10 runs faster than DX9 (and anyway the DX10 cards will all be really new vids so either way they will be the fastest and show better).

MTSoul - definitely. I see a greater number of average desktops in the big superstores containing a TV tuner because of the Intel VIIV requirement. Prior to that, you couldn't even find a TV tuner built into a high-end off-the-shelf PC!
batracer - I usually buy graphics cards that are a generation behind the most current one. It will be a while before I get a DX10 card :beam:
