I was recently suggested to get a Netgear router for myself and I also haven't been terribly happy with it. Though I will say that it is not as bad as your apparent situation. What kind of signal strengths are you getting? How far away are you from the router (and how many walls between you.. esp those on an angle to the base)? If there is a lot of 2.4ghz going on around you, you may want to play with the channel it uses... I found that this greatly improved my signal strength/reliability with my router, but it is almost like it doesn't last... I find my self changing it every now and then for temporary relief. Basically I'm saying you may want to exhaust your current setup before throwing down cash on a new one because you could very easily end up in the same situation and 50-100$ poorer.

Yeah, just remember, if you're running 802.11g (which you probably are) only 1, 6 and 11 are valid channels, other will likely cause you problems. Anyway, try getting a better antena for your wireless NIC. I used to have one that went directly from the NIC but then I bought one that has like 2 metres of cable and then it leads to an antenna that you put on the table about 7 inches high, it did wonders.
Also remove any large metal objects near the router.

Linksys, D-Link and Netgear are like paper rock and scissors. Some people will say don't get a Linksys, they suck, others say Netgear sucks and I've hear quite some people say D-Link sucks. I have a TP-Link, which is some chinese brand but it serves me quite well.
When it comes to the battle of the three, I'd suggest D-Link because I've heard the least people complain over them and Linksys because Linksys is basically Cisco for home users and Cisco is the man when it comes to networking.
What I'd give to have a good Cisco (not a Linksys) wireless router, but those things cost a fortune. The best thing about them is their, well, goodness and the fact that they can be configured through a command line, no more configuring through those kludgy, oversimplified web interfaces, man.
I hear the Linksys WRT54GL is top notch though. Also it may be worth waiting for 802.11n to get established, it'll support up to 500Mb/s bandwidth and like way longer range.

EDIT: I just did some research, seems like the WRT54GL is Linux based so you can do some really neat stuff with it like modify the firmware and add extra applications to it and I think you can log on to it via telnet too and change the settings in that way. Hmm, I might buy this.
