Well this definitely won't help both technologies not like I care DVD is just fine for me
They're saying its up to Hollywood to allow third party developers to get their apps running in order to playback HD content :sure:, if it was up to Hollywood they'd stop movie playback on PCs altogether
Too bad their forgetting about one small detail hackers

So, er they don't play?
"As I suspected, there is no merit to these stories. Vista will not in any way block playback of HD content (HD DVD or otherwise). We do have facilities in the operating system for applications to query whether there are unsigned drivers in the kernel, and as such, may be a potential risk to secure playback of high-def content. But it is up to the application to decide what to do with such data. They can, as they do today on XP, playback anything they like and ignore that information. And to be clear, no request has been made from content owners to block playback of HD content in Vista in 32-bit mode."
I'm confused, so they don't block anything, yet 3rd parties have to come in and create media players?

Who's gonna run 32 bit vista anyway? I mean by then almost everyone will have 64bit computers... not many school computers are gonna want to be running Blueray anyway.
It's not that big of a hit and should only effect people for a short while till they upgrade their comps.

The speaker mentioned in the original story was mistaken when he said that, for 32-bit Vista will be able to play HDCP content: http://news.com.com/2061-10794_3-6109427.html :beam:
Even though most of us will probably never use anything but a 64-bit CPU going forward, its nice to have 32-bit support!

So this is all a misunderstanding right?

You will need signed drivers. That will eliminate many older 32-bit machines (which really shouldn't be running Vista in the first place), but you could run into a situation where even newer 32-bit machines without signed drivers will be unable to playback HDCP content.
I don't have any HDCP content to try out on :P

Nice K-man, another rumor for you, The world will end today!!!
Oh wait not.
Anything with HDCP content may have problems running anyways if no one as noticed even some standard DVDs don't run correctly it's these idiots and protection schemes.
They spend more money on protection and then everything costs more and doesn't work half the time *cough* UBIsoft. If they had no protection schemes the companies don't realize they wouldn't lose as much money anyway you look at it Hackers will crack the code, there is no way around it.
