View Full Version : Attempt With Illustrator

I've had this program for almost a year and have barely touched it. So I decided it's time I started. :) This is just playing around with tapered brushes and the pen tool.

It's soooo different from using Flash to draw... :sure:

WOAH! That is freakin' awesome Kit!!! Add some color/shading and that would probably better than your Flash Line Art (if that's even possible)!

do you have a bigger version available? it's hard to see all the detail in that one, and i want to see all the tapered stuff etc, and also how all the folds look... very cool from what i can see

What tool do you use mainly? freehand or the bezier one?

it's really cool... :P

May 13th, 2003, 04:40 AM
Thank you very much, everyone. :)

Someone requested a larger version, so here it is full size...

http://images.deviantart.com/large/indyart/anime/Not_A_Morning_Girl.gif

I think it was the Bezier pen... The one where you draw two points then get the little handles to curve it? I used that. :) And the Tapered Round brush, at 10 and 5% thickness. :)

And Unflux, it is a girl. I just suck at drawing faces. :P

thanks for the full version kit, that's soo cool

and it's definitely a girl (if you know what i mean :thumb: )

sounds like the bezier tool to me, and that makes it even more impressive imo, because i think it's a hard tool to use well, especially with such flowing curves (no pun intended)

did you start from scratch or was there a pencil sketch in there somewhere?

anyway, it's so cool :A+:
Stuart

Kitiara
May 13th, 2003, 05:38 AM
God, I couldn't do that from scratch! I wish! Pretty much everything I do is from sketches beforehand that are scanned in and traced. :) Although I've got a Wacom at work now, so I can draw straight in.

That pen is a bit awkward though... I was trying to join up two lines in a point, and it kept making the whole thing into a 'U' shape instead of a 'V'. Kept having to make new layers then group it. :sure:

Thanks for the comments though, much appreciated. :)

That looks absolutely marvelous. Have you used Corel Draw by any chance - cause I was wondering how u find it vs Illustrator...

D :P

Kitiara
May 13th, 2003, 06:19 AM
I can't say I've ever used it to be honest. I've only really used Photoshop, Illustrator and Flash to draw with. :)

May 13th, 2003, 06:21 AM
thats is really really good.

its the best line art ive seen from you. but with anything that there every was there needs to be improvments... maybe its just me being picky but the hand need work and maybe the feet do to.

only trying to be constructive. but really that is great.

Kitiara
May 13th, 2003, 06:53 AM
No probs, any comments are always appreciated. :)

I know I've got a terrible track record with hands and feet. They always come out looking like they've been broken and stuck on or something. :P That's why I try not to draw them too often. :)

I'm going to attempt to colour this tonight. Maybe I ought to give her a face as well...

Starpromo
May 13th, 2003, 07:16 AM
im glad, you like critism...

i like finding things in peoples work that would make it so much better if it was changed.

i cant wait to see any adjustments... BUT im still likeing what you have now.

Kitiara
May 13th, 2003, 07:20 AM
It's making the changes that's the difficult bit. :)

Heh, I might stick her foot under the sheet. :P

Starpromo

i think thats a good idea...

Absolutely. :)

I remember when I was in 6th form and we installed Doom on the network. Whenever the IT teacher came into the room, every PC experienced a 'power surge' and simultaneously reset.

Strange that. :)

haha, yeah thats a classic... still used in this day and age...

although i prefer the shift + tab method...

anymore dodging techniques?

Kitiara
May 13th, 2003, 09:58 AM
Several, all the product of a mis-spent youth. :beam:

1. Whilst gaming, post a willing stooge as a lookout and get him to yell at the approach of anything resembling a teacher.

2. Again whilst gaming, select a kamikaze to waylay the teacher as soon as he enters, giving you time to get anything incriminating off your screen.

3. At Christmas (and you'll need to be near a plug socket for this), decorate your monitor with fairy lights and tinsel. Set up a miniature Christmas tree. Arrange cards. I did this during my A Levels, and the teacher branded me 'eccentric'.

4. Discover message sending facility. Utilise.

Happy days. :) Another favourite was the end of summer term special... This involved a huge water fight outside and my regretting wearing anything lycra as my clothes shrank. I ended up going home in some blokes' jeans and T-Shirt. I have no idea what he went home wearing. :P

Starpromo
May 13th, 2003, 10:01 AM

hhhmmm kit in lycra... haha

so on the right breast of the woman is that a nipple i can see poking the sheet or is it just a well placed crease?

iLikePie
May 14th, 2003, 02:34 AM
um garrett, that WAS the bigger size... if you look, the first one kit posted was a smaller version, then she put the original up by popular demand...

i guess it could be scaled up though

Kitiara
May 14th, 2003, 04:50 AM
I guess I can make it a bit bigger... Will have to do that tonight though, since it's on my home PC not my work one. :)

Lucky it's a vector. :)

This took a good couple of hours to do altogether. But remember it was drawn on paper first, then traced over in Illustrator. I wasn't going from scratch with it. :)

I've been preaching this forever it seems, Illustrator is such a great drawing program.

Great drawing kit, looks great. If you have problems importing it into flash.............if you want to??.............just throw it in Freehand first, then to flash, all in RGB of course.

thats how i draw everything, using illustrator. But i've mumbled enough

good work is what i came to write lol

Kitiara

Thank you. :)

I'm just waking up to how cool Illustrator really is. Now I've taken the time to look at it properly... :)

i think with illustrator, even though a lot of the functions aren't very useful when actually doing vector work, most are fairly cool, and the fact that it's GOT all the options is good in case you ever need them

and i like all the different stroke options, i think freehand also has lots

and also, i think the freehand and general vector tools are very well done, and the variable settings are the most responsive imo

Kitiara

Yeah, those tapered brushes are fantastic for doing this kind of manga art work. They're much better than a plain line, makes them look more hand drawn. :)
