I'm planning on designing my first web site, and was wondering what width the web page ussualy is... On my last computer it seemed to be about 720 or so, but on this one it's larger... Are there any numbers and sizes I should know about? Please help me out on this

1024x768 is starting to become the norm. But 800x600 is still out there. You can look at your web stats if you have them to see what is what. You gotta know your audience tho.

if the user is on 800x600 you can safely design for about 750 or 760 width for most browsers... thats the recommended max that i've heard for it.

Or, you could make a flexible (i.e. liquid) layout which will support anything between around 750 and, well, as high as you want…

You must consider the fact that not all visitors have the same monitor dimensions, so make something flexible for both, for example my site:

not all sites/designs are suitable for liquid layouts. Dont let the layout dictate the design, yet let the design dictate the layout. Better to get to know your audience or demographic.

Either option is okay; I prefer flexibility, but I didn't mean to suggest this was the only reasonable thing to do (hence the “or”). Flexibility will make it work for more people, but will take more code and might not look as ideal on all resolutions.

Another thing to consider which everyone always looks over is that not everyone browses full screen. I have 20 inch iMac with a horizontal width of 2050 (I believe) but my browser window rarely larger than around 900px.

Yeah, few Mac users maximize windows (the functionality isn't really there to do it).
