My iBook G4 (last year's model) has a built in microphone (to my knowledge they all do)... Is there anyway in hell that I can connect an external microphone, say for a musical instrument? All I have USB, Firewire, and a headphone jack. This seems hopeless, but I have not given up on the USB ports; there must be some microphone USB converter, or maybe not... Anyone got any tips? Uh... external sound card... maybe...

The iBook should have a 3.5mm mic port...

If not, look into an external sound card like this:

Gives you plenty of inputs/outputs, MIDI connectivity, AC3 and DTS decoding with optical output, and ultra-low latency when playing softsynths with a controller.

^, but I'd get the USB one. Apple has already dropped support for Firewire on their new macs. So if you are getting a good external sound card, might as well make it compatible with future computers.

Yes Templarian. Those external sound cards are cool, but 350 dollars is a lot of dollars.

I also checked my iBook ya3, I've had it for a year, and I've never seen a mic port.

Well if it's any consolation, I picked mine up for $250 :sure:

MTSoul: So they're removing Firewire from all future Macs??

The way you word this statement seems as if you're trying to make someone feel stupid.

But I don't need an actual Microphone/USB, I just need to be able to have the port. I need to buy a microphone for a flute, and a generic mic wouldn't be much better than the built in one.

ja... Something like this?:

(the inputs are left/right RCA, but it's easy enough to convert this to a 3.5mm audio jack)

More here, varying prices:

lol, yeah... or that. Looks prettier, too :P You don't get a shiny little breakout-box with knobs and flashing lights, though :trout:
