I recently started having problems running Half life 2... But that's got nothing to do with the error message. The problem is, when I try to run 'sfc /scannow' in the command prompt (one of the suggested fixes), windows prints out:
'Windows File Protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files.
The specific error code is 0x000006ba [The RPC server is unavailable.].'

I've never seen this error before; I can install programs and run everything else normally. I've tried running the command in safe mode but that does the same thing. I've checked and the Remote Procedure C... Csomething service is running... So I've got no idea why this is happening.

By the way, I'm running XP, so the only Microsoft 'help' I've found doesn't help (it's for windows 2000).

I'd appreciate any help.

Hmm, interesting. From your Start menu, right click on My Computer and select Manage. Expand the "Services and Applications" node. Select the Services item. On the right-hand panel, you will now see a huge list of services available in XP. Scroll all the way down until you hit Remote Procedure Call (RPC).

Double click on Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and make sure it is started and set to startup automatically with Windows.

That should work :)

Just checked it. Remote Procedure Call and Remote Procedure Call Locator are started and set to automatic (I don't think locators got anything to do with it, though...).

I'm confused.. I can't find anything but that on Google.
