Gradient blends

Hello...

I am wondering if there are any ways to create this effect. I know one way is to make a layer with a gradient fill but I wanted to know if there are other ways to create this. Here are two examples that I got from bobbyvalentino.com

gradient mask... best way to find out how to do it, is google gradient mask OR search these forums for gradient mask... as it's been answered a few times.
