This is to anyone who knows how to use paintshop pro. I was wondering if anyone knows how to make the background transparent and such. For example, say you have a moon and the background is all black. How would you go about getting rid of the black so there is only the moon, or at least make it transparent. A good example as a end result would be a icon. Icons on the desktop have just a image without a border or background showing, so its just the image molding to whatever background the user chooses for their desktop.

The general concept in any application (though I don't know if this will work in paint shop pro as I haven't touched it in six or seven years) is basically to create a layer underneath the image, which is transparent. Then just erase the black part either manually or by magic wand type tools. Save as gif/png/something else that supports transparency at some level, and you're good to go :)

hey, im using Paintshop Pro 7, and I have just found the transparency section under
Colors>Set Palette Transparency
Unfortunitly I have not been able to acomplish what I want yet. I have attached a moon.jpg image that I was attempting to try this to.
xxviii, I have noticed in PSP it creates the background layer for you if you don't already have one, and under the options in the location listed above I have set the transparency. But when I erase the black around the moon it just adds to the white and thus makes a white background rather than a black one.

You'll need to figure out how to creat a transparent layer, which shouldn't be too hard at all. Then you'll need to drag that layer under your moon and make sure there aren't any other layers conflicting. I'd do it for you, but this is something you'll want to learn to do for the future if you continue this kind of work, so it's best if you gain the knowledge :)

Okay, so far no luck. I'll post what I have tried so far (in paintshop pro). I have tried to make a transparent layer manualy, which so far has been complete failure. I have also attempt to allow PSP to automaticly do it for me with its transparancy option which in the end turned out saying it had done it when I didn't notice any difference in anything, including acomplishing what it said it did.
So I was wondering if I can get a link to someplace someone knows that would help me work around this problem to understand how it should go.

. .jpg doesnt have transpency, your gonna want to use .png .gif (quality will be hit pretty bad usually on photos and such).
(unless you were doing this for testing then sry for saying lol).

ah HA, I found it out. I had actually saved my file as a gif and when I went back to delete the jpeg got rid of the gif by accident instead. I didn't notice till Templarian mentioned jpeg and I went back and checked. Got it working now.
 Thanks all
