By this time next week, AMD will have massively cut the prices on many of their chips, and we'll be able to buy the new Core Duo 2 (code name Conroe) chips. :D
I'm way excited. The motherboard on my main workstation is currently fried, and I'm waiting for the release of these new chips to fix it. I'm scrapping my current Dual Xeon system (anyone want to buy two 3 GHz Xeon chips?) and (probably) picking up an E6700. If for some reason it turns that the Intel chips have some undiscovered and horrid flaw, I'm getting an X2 4800. :D
Anyhow. I'm stoked about my upcoming E6700, which smokes even the fastest AMD chip. :smirk2:

YES, Will memrom come out at the same time as Conroe? I know my company already has copies of all of those chips... too bad I can't get my hands on those

Bah, totally. I know that the guys in the hardware development department are already playing with the chips, but somehow I don't think they'd let me filch any. :h:
I'm so stoked. E6700 here I come. :D

Despite all this Intel's stock went down the past few days. Hopefully it'll bounce back up, but its at a low currently - lowest since '98.

Probably because they've gotten so much of their once monolithic market share eaten up by AMD. It's at a 45/55 split at the moment. Ouch for Intel. This will probably steal back some of the high end market, since the E6700 spanks the FX62.

And in case you haven't seen it, the Conroe chips overclock like MONSTERS. :jailbreak:

Heh. I just got in an argument with some guy who works at Frys who tried to tell me that Intel's new chips (he didn't know that they were called the Core Duo 2) didn't perform as well as the FX62. I got him to check out the benchmarks and eat his words. :fight:

From reading on Anandtech, the new Core Duo 2 surpasses all the new/recent cards from AMD.

Alienwares new Mach V will have the chip in it... This is the largest jump in computer performance ever. Doom was at like 134fps now its at 244fps all setting maxed at 1280x1024 i believe (mostly video card but they said the processor helped a lot also).

Who is going to like running Doom 3 at 100+ fps anyway lol you couldn't even play it, no computers are really any bit faster after 2 GHz they prooved that a while back, but anyways now I need another new motherboard god and I just wanted to upgrade to a Socket 939 AMD I never liked Intel since ours just kept getting slower and slower, and everyone I know always had problems.

You are running a Dual Xeon System and want to upgrade from that already? ... no offense but do you know what the definition of Greed (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/greed) is?
Yet I guess if you are either spoiled by parents or just have an abundance of money, I would want to upgrade too ...

You have a Dual Xeon system @ 3GHz and you want an improvement?
What? Too much energy consumption?

Yeah I've been waiting for the Core 2 Duo all summer! I need a laptop for school, but I've been holding out. I'm really really really really (etc) hoping for a Merom in the Macbook Pros at WWDC.

Jumping Jesus on a stick that's awesome!
But do they have backwards compatibility with 32-bit apps like my trusty AMD64?

OK let me get this straight for individuals like myself who don't have the updates on hardware specs. Do we go for these new duo's now or still stick with the AMD x2's because of cost, cooling and it's basic technical architecture?

July 25th, 2006, 11:41 AM
Foodpk - yeah, these chips are incredible. They perform equally well on both 32 and 64 bit applications to my understanding.
Minimalistic - You go for the new Duos now. For $300 you can pick up an E6600, which rivals the performance of the FX-62 which is currently retailing for around $1000. The Duos are also more energy efficient. They're superior in all ways - they're better performers, they perform better per dollar, they consume less energy... time to jump back on the Intel bandwagon.
They insist that they're going to be flooding the market, and that there won't be shortages - but we'll see - there's a damned lot of buzz, and I know a lot people will be staying up to check Newegg at midnight. :thumb2:

If you don't need a new computer/processor now though, quad core chips based on the same architecture are rumored to be coming out before the end of the year.
Anogar
July 25th, 2006, 01:44 PM
Indeed. I'm thinking I might just pick up the Core Duo 2 E6600 and then get a quad-core chip whenever that comes out and get rid of the Core Duo 2. They're cheap enough that buying one as a temporary processor until something new comes out isn't a big deal.
edit: Note that many programs will not make good use of 4 cores at first. It'll be interesting to see how they turn out.

Yeah, get dual quad cores with each core HT. 16 "CPUs" eh?
Does Intel put HT onto each core? I don't see why not.

HyperThreading is an outdated technology. It's not really used anymore.
Yeldarb
July 25th, 2006, 03:35 PM
Actually I think they're bringing it back soon. I don't remember where I read that but I heard about core 2 duos coming out with hyperthreading soon.
Anogar
July 25th, 2006, 03:47 PM
HyperThreading is for NetBurst micro-architechture based chips, and Intel has stopped using Netburst, and is now using "Core" micro-architechture. From what I understand, the pipeline is too short to take advantage of HT. Not to say that they won't make something similar for the new chips, but it won't be HyperThreading (though the marketing department might call it that.)

E6600 for $300? Nice.
Anogar
July 26th, 2006, 01:03 AM
Hell yes. It smokes the FX-62 (which, even after the price cut (http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_609,00.html?redir=CPT301) - is still $830) in almost every benchmark, and it's only $300. I mean, if someone randomly dropped this chip off at your doorstep tonight, the E6600 that is, you would have the best chip on the market.
If you want to spend another few hundred dollars and get the E6700 or E6800X, you would see a minor increase (like 5% - 10%) in performance, but the E6600 is the king of value, and only very slightly behind the E6700 and E6800. :thumb2:

I have seen a few places where you can order these, but they are already on backorder, so youll have to wait till the 2nd round of shipments. they are available tomorrow from what I understand...where are you guy going to try and buy from? My PSU went out, so figured its time for a complete upgrade (makes sense).

None of the main sources have posted them yet. I haven't seen them for sale. I imagine there will be a bit of a bum rush tonight at midnight. The Woodcrest (updated versions of the Xeon chips) chips sold out within minutes, in the middle of the night.
However, Intel has promised wide distribution of these particular chips, and said that is has produced enough to meet demand, but I'll believe that when I see it. ;)

AMD has joined forces with ATI now so even if the Core Duo 2 (which is a retarted name) does outperform AMD chips (no one really needs a 15GHz computer they all perform at the same speed after 1GHz anyhows) AMD can still be equally effecient with Intel.

I did notice neweggs price of the Athlon 64 X2 4200+ AM2 I was going to buy went from $358 to $199. I would probably have sliced my jugular if I bought it a few weeks ago...
Anogar
July 26th, 2006, 12:31 PM
Yeah, you're completely misinterpreting whatever statistic you heard about all computers performing at the same speed after 1GHz.
I don't care if in some theoretical nature the chips are running at the same speed - a computer with a new Core Duo 2 will perform relevant tasks significantly faster than anything AMD has to offer. Further, it will be some time before you see any performance gains as a result of AMD purchasing ATI.
You go tell yourself that your 5 year old 1GHz computer is the same as a new Core Duo 2 if it makes you feel better, but we're going to be doing everything faster. :D

Found on a couple sites, all backordered. Newegg still hasnt listed them though. The E6600 is $339 on zipzoomfly...I guess I won't hold my breath. Probably better to wait until the first wave of consumers get their opinions out about them.

Can't wait for the WWDC. From all the rave reviews the C2D have been getting, hopefully I can get my hands on an even speedier MacBook Pro :thumb:
