I'll be attending college this fall, close to a month from now and I'll need a laptop.

I have a lot of money saved up from work, graduation, etc. Any suggestions? :)

Please link me to the product page, if you have experience with the laptop, why you like it, etc.

I'm really thinking about getting the 15.4in 2.16Ghz MacBook Pro, but I'm not too sure yet.

tablets aren't that great unless you really really need that function... I suggest getting a good 17 inch dell with some coupons that could seriously save you like over $400 dollars at like the dell site or through notebookreview.com and notebookforums.com However if that's too big for you, try the 15 inch etc.... You could also try the top of the line HPs, my office is full of em and supposingly there pretty nice....

Tablet PCs are great
You have the handwritting function that lets you handwrite notes and then convert them to text if you want to......that is a great function
HP makes a tablet the HPTC4400

I have not seen a single person in college writing their notes on a tablet. Tablets are for professionals and business people, a decent Dell will go a long way in college. Plus, if you do buy, make sure you use Dell University to get some discounts.

Here's a good laptop for cheap I just saw today.

I disagree with the positive comments on tablets. I find that it doesn't properly recognize my craptastic handwriting :(

The second I saw the title, I was going to scream MBP.. but it looks like you've already got that opinion. Your only two options are MBP and any Dell. Now you get to decide which OS you like better ;)

Did you calibrate the tabet to reconize your handwritting?

Templarian
July 20th, 2006, 12:16 AM
^Exactly you mostly are forced to do calibrate it there harish if you dont then it won't really work well at all. My pocket pc is that way although its reconization technolgy is beyond amazing.

The MacBook Pro is awesome. I have the 2ghz model (:(, before the other came out), and it's absolutely spectacular.

It can run Windows natively, it's the latest technology, and with Leopard coming out, it would be horrible to be without it.

Really, it's your only choice. It's amazing. :P

No. Most people that aren't tech-savvy know about hand-writing recognition technologies and table PCs, and won't be impressed. They might not have seen one in the past, but that certainly doesn't mean they will be all impressed. I'd certainly think to myself, “wow, what an idiot, bringing a computer to take notes in class in the eighth grade.”

Even in my “rich school” (seriously, I talked to somebody the other day and they asked my school; when I told them, they're like, “oh, the rich school, right?” I'm like, “sigh, yes…”), nobody uses a computer. Now that would make you an outcast.

Wait... you know how horribly rediculous it would look to be writing notes on a tablet during class. Laptops are for College not for Middle School or Highschool. Not to sound mean but you wasted some money there Cyber. (I do see tablets all around its how they do fast inventory checks on the wines at the store i work at).

Why would he bring a expensive piece of tech like that to school?

Jeff Wheeler

I would never bring my MacBook Pro to my school. Never.

Tablets are actually pretty slick, however they're unfortunate in that they lack the firepower to be a good primary machine, and yet they cost as much.

Max: I have a PocketPC and EVERYONE (including/especially the girls) are always begging me to let them play with it. Tablet could be different though.

If you're buying the MacBook Pro, which I would recommend, make sure you get the student discount. It'll save you a good $150.

By the way, cybercode: please don't double post.

Anyhow I actually bring in my laptop everyday to school and so does a lot of other people who aren't neccesarily tech savvy either. I have to because I use it for my "art class" :P

I use a Dell Axim. The recognition capability is similar to a Tablet PC, it sucks :P Are you really going to spend 2000 dollars to save a tree that you'll probably cut up to print on later anyway? In college, people generally have recorders, record the lecture, listen to it in its fullest in class... take notes later. It's much more efficient and works much better. Why do you have all that crap anyway Cybercode :P You don't need it all.

I've got a Dimension 4600 and my good new Macbook which I just installed Parallels on to run Windows to run Photoshop :)

Sorry to take this thread away a bit. No thread hijacking!

edit:/ Also, the Merom processors will have even worst heat problems. Just wanted to point that out. Also, 64-bit applications won't be as widely available as you would hope. (I read this somewhere. I only see that 32 bit operating systems won't work on 64bit. I thought the software will work even if its 8 bit, just really slowly.)

cant you use your laptop as a recorder if it has a decent built in mike, (do the MBP have built in mikes) i dont know about you guys but i type faster than i write, i just make more mistakes, i think typing would be just as hard as taking hand written notes. i think the recording idea was much better than to take the tablet, its not effiecent. you would be spending all that money just to take notes. you would lose all functionality of a normal computer. its your call, if your going to get a tablet you might as well get one that has a keyboard.

In the beginning of each semester, I buy a 5 subject notebook from Five Star. It has served every purpose I need it to serve. It's a notebook, folder, binder, receipt holder, all in one. Plus, I don't look like a complete dork in class with a tablet.

Get a laptop. Period.

As for the new Memrom chipset, wait a month, get the Core Duo's. Although you won't get as high of a performance, you'll definitely be getting one heck of a deal as every retailer tries to push out Core Duo to make room for Memroms.

You're in High School, use friggin' paper! We're talking about college, not HS..

Once again, sorry for going a bit off topic. I guess it'd be good to get the newest processor.. but I don't see very many benefits in Merom aside from the 64 bit processing.. also I think its Merom.. but I'm not sure.

If you know the guy who's doing the site, tell him to pretend he's got more donations then he has. The donations will come in faster because people will know people visit his site.

Also, it's the same concept as the milliondollarhomepage... one time use only. All the clones (like this one) never got anywhere. I would know, I've made 2 for 2 clients.

The fact that it has a latch and an IR reciever makes it a Macbook Pro. I originally thought it was a Powerbook till I noticed the IR reciever. It doesn't look like its 15". Did you stretch it? The Macbook has a magnetic latch down rather than an actual latch. Great way to store the remote ;) Put the remote against a magnet at the top of the screen.

How'd you get it for free? Also, black is better. It looks ugly online.. but its great in person. Plus, the white scratches up and looses its color fast. I haven't noticed a single scratch on my MacBook despite pretty heavy use.
