font legalities

Does anyone know much about font legalities? Can I comercially use a font (i.e. arail) for design legally? Do I need to pay for the rights to use a font?
I know alot of designers just use the font w/o even thinking twice about the legal issues regarding the typeface.
Any imput would be appreciated, including links to sites with relative content.

fonts like arial are provided with systems and are resident on most, so you can use the heck out of it without paying anything. However there are other fonts, usually the less common ones that you can purchase from font archieve sites (usually not expensive). Once you own the font you can do what you want with it, whether commercial or writing love letters to that special someone ;)
