I just thought I would attempt to vary my artistic talents (or maybe develop them in the first place) through the form of drawing. You know, the kind with a sketchpad and pencil.
I have NO idea where to start and what I've tried so far has been a disaster. Any of you know how to draw? If so can you give me some good tips? I can see it in my head, but I can't get it on paper.
Thanks!

Uh..... just........ PRACTISE PRACTISE PRACTISE
drawing is one of those things that takes YEARS to become good at... if you really want to 'vary your artistic talents' then you should have no problem being patient until it comes...

I really don't like those "learn to draw" things. I think it comes natural, of course it helps with tips and stuff. And to look at what others have done, to get inspiration. Like fasterthanlight said, practise! If your bored sometime just screw around with a pencil or something on a piece of paper and by time you will get the hang of it. Cuz you need to know the feeling... everyone's got their own style so learning from yourself is the best. I think. Of course you will not learn special tecnics and so that way, you can do that with the "learn to draw" stuff I guess. But just practise! It does take time! And look at what others have done, I think that is important:) Good luck

To hone your skills try making six consecutive perfect circles. Once you have the dexterity move on to better object.
I've done a few nudes this year and it's a real treat (artistically, I mean :treat:)

Get an anatomy book and copy until you're stupid. Don't ever get learn to draw books or anything like that. Develop naturally through observation. I've been drawing for years and I'm still learning new things every day. Also art classes will make you hate drawing, so stay away from those. Life drawing classes are always fun though, you learn a LOT about form that you never would regularly.

it depends on what you want to draw though... there are manny different styles ... choose the one that suits who you are. some people like to draw comic book type stuff, others are more abstract, some people stick to straight real-life type art

get super drunk and grab a pencil...be sure to not jab it in your eye! (this actually works) puts that lousy left brain to sleep for a while)

^agreed, but a little hard to keep a steady line lol
also, (not to promote or condone it) depending on your habits, getting baked works but would not recommend trying to write things down like a story, the handwritting tends to turn into a wavy line rather than distinct letters.

After reading the title, I could just say this: 1. Use your hand and pick up a pencil. 2. Use that pencil and move it around on a piece of paper or even your desk. That will create something, and thats the way you draw! Very very easy explained.

again practice i agree - but its also really about seeing it in ur mind, not just with your eyes....obviously if your not drawing from a reference then its all up to your mind, but even then - in order to tell your hands how to make an excellent drawing, you need to see it clearly in your head first.
its like any kind of creativity - eg music - its good to hear the music in in your head first, to know what your trying to achieve - then you can worry about doing it.
also work on building confidence in your strokes :)

Like everyone says, you have to draw every day to become better. It's like working out, you won't be a good drawer unless you keep it up. I can recommend croquis/nude sketching, no matter what style you want. It trains the eye to observe rather than look, and helps you put what you observe on paper. Don't expect this to be an erotic experience though. Sketching people from magazines won't be as effective, you should go to a course. Other places you can draw people and things is maybe horse races, soccer matches, parks etc.
The circle thing mentioned is a good warm-up before you start drawing the stuff you want.
