We have finally been approved to get a Mac at work. :thumb2:
At home, I have a G5 iMac and a G3 iBook. I trust the older stuff, and don't know much about the Intel stuff. We are about to buy a Quad tower, and I am wondering if we will be sorry when the other towers come out...!!?
Any help would be appreciated.

Well since the entire Mac architecture is changing and all that good gravy I'd recommend waiting. Programs are going to run better on the Intel and what not.

I'm thinking so too, my boss is pretty excited... It may be hard to convince him to wait... :ponder:
This box will have to last a pretty long time... 3-4 yrs
A max of 16 gig ram she shall be packin' 8-]
I wonder just how long it will be before Apple puts out the monster drool on yourself Intel box?

Articles like this one (http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2006/7/12/4622) seem to suggest August, which is only a month away.

Last for four years?
Wait.
If your boss can't wait then she shouldn't be working in a position where she can make financial decisions.
It's only a month's wait until super mega fast way-better-than-G5 technology.

ya, i have a feeling that we might be sorry... the really hard thing to do here is to talk i.t. into getting a box that cant really handle our cs2. emulation never appeals to an it dept. :puzzle:
i must admit that i would rather use cs2 on a g5, or windows platform at this moment.
im sure cs3 will be universal...? but when is that gonna happen!!? ya simply cant have a graphics outfit without adobe...
damn you, adobe...:{

If you're planning to run Adobe CS2, then I'd stick with the tried-and-tested old-school PowerPC architecture for the time-being. Even if they released a universal version tomorrow, it wouldn't be wise to depend your business' operations on something so young, methinks.
If you're primarily going to be using CS2... and the only option will be to run it emulated... then I think the choice is simple :thumb:

Get a Intel based Mac and if your worried about CS2 not performing great you can use bootcamp and use CS2 on it then when Adobe releases the UB versionjust delete bootcamp :beam:

Unless Intel decides to switch the Core Microarchitecture to the AMD64 extensions, you'll still be hitting the 4GB ceiling....
Oh, and there's so many problems with your "4 dual core processors" theory it's not even funny; the most of which is simple sensibility.

For God's sake, wait. Reasoning:
1. In less than 2 months, you'll be buying a much better computer. Talk about buyer's remorse.
2. Emulation? Not a problem. When you look at the other Intel Macs, CS2 is emulated roughly as fast as they run on the PowerPC models they replaced. Theoretically you'd be stupid to buy a PowerPC model now based on not having to use emulation: it'll run almost as fast on the Intel model in emulation.
3. Apple doesn't have a heart when it comes to people using older technologies. Remember OS9? Remember it being phased out a year and a half after OSX was released? Same thing will happen with PowerPCs. Leopard will support them, but all signs show that Mac OS X 10.6 won't support it PPC. Which means after this winter, there's a big possibility that your system would never get a meaningful upgrade again.
Do yourself a favour, wait. Else, you'll feel buyer's remorse for the next 4 years.

Thanks for all the replies...
I just about have everyone talked into waiting.
The purchase has been put off for now.
We will see what happens...
I suppose we will know more on Aug. 7...
Leopard is rumored to be announced, with a MacPro tower to run it on...
I know Apple is notorious for doing things like this, but I HIGHLY doubt they would be dumb enough not to make Leopard G5 compatible... I am not worried about that at all.
Although good points have been noted here about emulation, I still don't trust emulating ANYTHING.
Thanks again

Apple has come out publically and stated that Leopard with support the PowerPC platforms of the past, but anything beyond that is highly doubtful.

The newest rumor indicates that Apple will be using Intel's latest Xeon processors in the new MacMac Pro (PowerBook:MacBook::PowerMac:MacMac), but the details of the rumor don't look very trustworthy anyway....

Wait for sure. My school district always buys the technology right before the new stuff comes out. For example, right before Apple released all the intel stuff, they revamped every school with new iBooks, iMacs, Powerbooks, and a PowerMac or two.
They decided that they want the fully tested and awesome running fully compatible stuff rather than to be beta testers themselves and get the new technology. It's a good theory, but with the whole Processor change and the etc. PowerPC support in software and what not will be very limited. Take a look at the game consoles. Notice how when new ones come out, the old ones don't get games anymore.
Yeah, wait. The processor change is too big of a deal.

As I said, the rumor is highly dubious.
How long has it been since Bluetooth/Airport have been optional rather than standard on Apple computers, for example?
The relocated power supply makes no sense either; heat control would be better with it in its original place.
Also, those rumored specs totally leave out the 3.0Ghz Xeons, Intel's best at the moment.
Fishy at best. :trout:

Na, they are closer than fishy I'll bet. Normally, these "rumors" are right on the money.
Regardless, it is going to be a very sweet box, and I cannot wait to get ours!
I still cant get over the ATI thing... :h: I surley hope they are wrong on that one.
LONG LIVE NVIDIA! :P

Actually, the rumors tend to be off a lot, especially when they're not corroborated by multiple sites, like ThinkSecret. Actually, ThinkSecret has been off the mark a lot lately.
The reliable rumors tend to be the ones about 2 or less weeks before the actually announcement.

The desktops have always had optional bluetooth/wireless. It's the notebooks that have it by default.
