Ok, started a new robot today. I want to make something that'll show off HDR maps a bit more than my last project. This is my work on the upper thigh so far... I'll be working on the leg most of the day. It'll eventually be a smaller scale robot than my last one... sort of a character more than a bulky machine.
Tell me know what you think so far (bearing in mind it has just been started today)

I've switched my focus onto developing my poor texturing skills. Hopefully if I can get my skills up I'll be able to put something into a convincing scene... I want to make it look photo-realisitic, but not real... if that makes sense.

I used a falloff-fresnel map in the reflection slot and a HDR lat/long map in the environment slot with spherical mapping. The material is a brazil test material.
how many Kilobyte or Megabytes is 3D Studio Max?
r3 is about 100-110 mb (on the CD)
r4 is about 142mb (on the CD)
r5 is about 570mb (on the CD)
They are all bigger after installation (well I assume 4 and 5 are bigger, I don't have them).
Bryce 2 was one of the first 3D apps I ever bought... disappointing really. It doesn't have much in the way of modelling tools, but you can make some pretty convincing landscapes.

May 6th, 2003, 01:31 AM
I got off the beaten track whilst testing out some material mapping methods (and creating a few of my own materials in photoshop). This was the result. It's not a robot, but perhaps I'll include some of this in a scene as a backdrop.

Nice dude, thats not even hdr, you could have the robot breaking the wall, coming straight to the camera. yelling like the hulk! hehe :smirk:
Or have like a robot fight, and have your character hit that scenery, making cracks in the wall. :beam:

That's a pretty cool idea. This last week I've been flitting from project to project... I need something to focus on... *sigh!*
here's the latest render on the leg. Not much work done, actually I removed some of the dodgy leg parts... I'm struggling to fit this in as a part of some ideas I sketched out a few days ago. I always seem to be short on time!

You are really good at this stuff Ironikart. Have you had a look at the 3d contests they have at 3dluvr? They have some pretty cool prizes and this contest's theme may just be perfect for you - cyborgs (unfortunately non-military). Anyways I'm no where near being that good to enter a contest (I am still working on a human character - it took me a week to model the body and a week for the head and have not even gotten close to texturing yet). Actually - I would like to post them and get some input but haven't got them here (I'm at work). I'll post them in a couple days from home when I finish with my house being repainted (I haven't had a computer or internet at home in a week - sniff sniff and boo hoo hoo).

got a question for you ironikart, do you model with one mesh or makeit up or different modelled parts?
mdipi
May 6th, 2003, 09:12 PM
yeah i wanted to know the same...lol.
ironikart
May 6th, 2003, 10:03 PM
different parts. It looks the same rendered, takes more space in the file size... but its quicker. If I was inclined I could attach them together and clean up excess mesh, but then it becomes harder to make any changes later on. Most of the parts are just modified primitives. If I have some complex modelling to do I usually poly model from a plane primitive and make the mesh edge by edge.:beam: (for more organic looking stuff)
I'm really enjoying this robot so far. Hopefully I should have it finished late next week.
.soulty
May 6th, 2003, 10:10 PM
ah k, so thats why you are having texturning problem.
ironikart
May 6th, 2003, 10:15 PM
yeah, I find max 3's UVW unwrapping hell to use, especially if the mesh is complex. I've tried my old version of Painter 3D but it doesn't support max 3 (only 1 and 2... that's how old my version is!).
I understand that in later versions you can use a mesh Unwrap to make UV mapping easier, but I've yet to find that function in r3. Are you a Max user Soulty? I saw a post from you earlier and you seem to know the ins and outs of Maya pretty well...
.soulty
May 6th, 2003, 10:23 PM
Well I have tried every 3d program some time, Max, XSi, Houdini,Maya cinema.
But i rather use maya, just like the way it works and the feel around the app.
ironikart
May 6th, 2003, 11:09 PM
Houdini! Pretty rare to find someone who's had experience with houdini. Every other 3D artist I've had contact with may have touched it at one time, but I've heard it's pretty complex to get a good grasp of. I've never used it my self, but I've read positive things about it as a professional app.
Do you have a gallery of work anywhere soulty?
.soulty
May 6th, 2003, 11:21 PM
can't say i have experience with houdini, just checked it out. Pretty complex app, its very heirachy based, like every step you do can be in the heirachy, so you can go back and change something like a bevel which will effect the out come of everything after it, much like the stacking capabilities of max. though the very cool thing is that you can go back into the history and make a copy of that node (its all about nodes in there) and then make another heirachy based onthat copy of that node without touching your original model, and you can also after combine the nodes. Too much, watched some vids at 3d buzz , amazing stuff. Too complex for me, so i still with maya.
:: Working through my website right now, The one i have up now, is uncomplete in the 3d section, well the whole portfolio section was thown up. so soon as i get this finished, ill be putting up some 3d work. and i can get back to working on some 3d, sites taking up all my time. :smirk:

May 6th, 2003, 11:31 PM
Your site rocks ;)
Very slick, nice transitions, I'm envious. I'm going to have to complete some more artwork before I get my site up and going. Basically I have 2 styles of 3d artwork now... before Brazil and after! having a decent renderer has inspired me to continue producing some 3D art... I think I hit a wall with how good a render can look just using Max's default scanline. I look forward to seeing your work when you get it up on your site.:)

I've done another render with the torso partly textured. I've been fiddling around combining some light HDR use with the maps, perhaps the paint can give a light reflection and the rust remain dull...

It shouldn't be too hard to change the colour once I've finished the model. The materials are all .psd files that I've made myself, the underlying colour is a separate layer.

looking good, one thing, is that chest plate suppose to be jaggy around the curve?
ironikart
May 7th, 2003, 10:25 PM
hmmm... I might insert a bit more detail there to make it look more rounded. I was a bit undecided about what to do with that. I was just going to cover it, but I think I'll fix it first.
.soulty
May 7th, 2003, 11:57 PM
you could extend that part out and make a logo or a symbol. Would look pretty kool, if not, yep make it rounder.
ironikart
May 8th, 2003, 01:44 AM
I smoothed it out a bit by adding more edges. The edge tools in Max 3 aren't the best (no edge loop or any of those nice things) so I can't put too much more detail into it without creating some funky looking poly's. I must say this is coming close to some of the best work that I've done so far.

May 8th, 2003, 02:01 AM
thats why you model with one mesh. hehe, but dosent matter, as a static image i will look awesome, though it would be great to see this robot and the other one you made in some sort of fight.
:beam:
:::edit:: I read your last post incorrectly. lol
ironikart
May 8th, 2003, 02:21 AM
I was thinking of a static image like the ones from the warcraft series of games where the orcs and humans stand face to face. I'd have to use a different robot model for the adversary because the other one is on a much larger scale and doesn't really have much posability (or personality). I wish I had more time to do this stuff... it's getting to the point where I want to make it more than just a hobby!:nerd:
I'm coming to the point in the modelling now where I struggle. Hands and feet I find the hardest to make convincing... I probably won't be able to continue with it until next monday though... real work awaits me!:sigh:

Not sure about the lower legs that I've modelled, but here's the updated render anyway. I might think about changing them later, but I'm trying to model the hands at the moment... tell me what you think, perhaps they only look funny to me?
It seems the details are the things that take forever. I've gone through several different head versions... finally I've got a sketch I'm happy with so I'll start modelling it after the hands.

.soulty
May 12th, 2003, 09:47 PM
looking great :) I dont mind the legs, you can kinda go for that superhero body frame, body and chest huge and legs normal. :smirk:
Your feet might what is making it looked small. Even though they looked good, maybe his feet can be chunkier.
ironikart
May 13th, 2003, 12:41 AM
I broadened the feet and put a bit of an ankle guard in to beef it up a bit. I modelled some quick hands so I could test out some postures using character studio. It seemed to rig up pretty well in my tests so posing it after it's complete shouldn't be a huge job.
I starting to wonder how the head will go onto this model, I have a feeling it'll look slightly out of place. The head is pretty much the most important part of a character model so I envision many hours spent on getting it to look convincing. And then there is the detail to add to the body itself... still not sure on what to add there.
.soulty
May 13th, 2003, 12:50 AM
looking good. :)
about your head, Considering where the hole is for your head, are you going to make a long neck that will bring the head forward or straight up?
ironikart
May 13th, 2003, 01:40 AM
It was going to be stooping forward, but I may have to move the neck hole for that... I've been thing about putting the head on a flexible neck to make it look more natural. Ah well, I'll see how it goes!:)
ironikart
May 13th, 2003, 01:45 AM
<-- P.S. I put a new avatar up (I drew a bit of my inspiration from your's soulty). I also wanted to brand my images with something a little better than just a text message.
.soulty
May 13th, 2003, 01:54 AM
I like :) , im gonna call u ironik for now on, kinda didnt think of your name as ironik-art. lol, stupid me
:: yeah that neck position reminds me of the characters from 5th element, the space dudes (who held the five elements), their heads in the front.
The neck hole will determain the way your neck and head is going to be, so have a good look at it before you start modelling. It might be interesting to keep it there in the frontish.
ironikart
May 13th, 2003, 02:28 AM
Yeah, I'll set about moving it before I model the head. I've heard a few people mention a similarity to the 5th element! I've watched that movie so many times it must be unconsiously showing in my pics. I've been beating my brow trying to think of a scene to put it in. All I know for sure is that I'm going to steer clear of the traditional sci-fi grates and pipes in favour of something a little more homely.
.soulty
May 13th, 2003, 02:30 AM
love that 5th element movie, nice flix.
Homely. lol, do a robot family, with robot kids running around, :smirk:
ironikart
May 13th, 2003, 05:58 PM
hehe, I was thinking of putting him smack bang in the middle off a hobbitville-like scene (modified to my own style). This is probably only because I want to do a scene that looks reminiscent of Bag-end... that's the only movie I've seen more than the 5th element!
ironikart
May 13th, 2003, 08:39 PM
I've moved the neck hole down slightly to accomodate a stooped head. I also adjusted my character rigging so it moves a little more realistically. No animation yet, I'll leave that till last... but the poses can be easily changed now.

Looks like I'm gonna need luck! My first attempt didn't turn out as well as I wanted. It looks ok from far away, but doesn't stand up to close scrutiny. Something funky happened with the modelling on the chest. I tried to fix it, but it looks like it'll have to be remodelled (D'oh!). It's not that visible from a distance.

I've decided I've gone as far as I want with this one. These things can consume days just tweaking... so here is a semi-final render (done in Max4) and some post-render work done in photoshop. It's not perfect, but it'll do for now. I'm going to get stuck back into some scene building work so I can have a completed image, rather than just models posing on blank-ish backdrops.
Hope you like it!
