my friend was thinking about buying an e-commerce script[php] that has credit card processing, shopping cart, search, etc...
we were wondering how this credit card processing works? when someone makes a transaction on our website, do we still need a credit card machine to run these transactions through or does the website do it? also, do we have to pay monthly fees for processing cards? im lost please help

You will need a third party merchant to do the actual processing, such as paypal, authorize.net, etc. Most of the merchants I've seen do have a monthly and/or per transaction fee. Try searching kforum/google, you'll find tons of resources.

It depends on your budget on what way you want to go about it yourself but I just created a store for a company who already have the credit card facilities in their office. The software I used simply sends the info to them and they take care of the payment. The software is also capable of working with paypal and similar services, and also real 100% automted merchant accounts through banks. I know very little about all that but I suggest you take a look at the software i used and ask on the cart forums there for the best way forward for you. The support there is great.

This is a question that I ask to myself either.
I am searching for this issue because I will have a project in hand.
The Zen Cart and OScommerce are great but their limited to their own style, It's hard to change all and understand all the code when we have another kind of organization when work.
I read this websites:
https://www.moneybookers.com/app/help.pl?s=m_info
http://www.thesitewizard.com/archive/creditcards.shtml
http://www.verisign.com/
And in this we can see how somethings work, what I don't understand is if we use one account like moneybookers, how do we compile our forms to send information.
This is kind silly to say because I didn't read all the site, but the question is in the air and some opinions over here are nice!
Regards,
Ruben
