I would love to see a tutorial on integrating Flash an Photoshop. I know some people (such as Kirupa) do not use Photoshop but I think It'd be safe to say the vast majority of designers do...it's just newbys like me that always have the one word question.."how?" I find my self asking that question at least 15 times a day. And then theres just those certain sites which I find my self visiting back to at least every other day such as 2advanced.com and I simply ask my self.."how the #$%& do they do that?!" So...I wish someone out there would write a tutorial on how to cleverly combine the power of both programs...maybe this will give Kirupa a reason to go out and get a copy of photoshop :-)

I freak out whenever I see the new things that appear in the Actions panel. I'm sure it would take a trillion tutorial to cover everything, but it would be a good idea to show how the new functions and properties work.

Hmm you pose a good question. Well I see so many sites that use graffix that I know were NOT made in flash..for instance www.2advanced.com <--perhaps tutorials on not so much integration, but how to make graffix especially aimed for use in a flash interface. I know my question might've been too broad but I have photoshop etc. and I'd like to know how to harness it's power so that I can make sites in Flash better. Well come to think of it integration wasn't a bad choice of words because it would be nice to how to make something in photoshop (such as a button etc.) and put it into flash.

ilyaslamasse,

I'm working on getting on-line... I've been out of the loop for about a year. (I had a baby... which takes up most of your time!) But I'm working full time now under contract as a multi-media technician (oooo, job title) and hopefully will have some of my own work up soon... I'll keep you guys posted!

I was also thinking about doing a tutorial (because at Flashkit these questions come up a lot) integrating 3dStudio Max (which I'm also a "guru" in), Photoshop and Flash...

Would that be of interest?

April 11th, 2002, 03:16 PM
I don't think many people own 3DMax here, so I don't think we're gonna be able to do the tute. I don't know, as you wish.

Hey Lafunk, how is it going ? Concerning that 3DSMax tutes, I think a friend of mine is gonna buy it (or 'get' it, I don't know...) so if you do choose to make a tutorial, you'll have at least one person to talk to

I don't know much about 3D Studio Max, but if anyone is willing to contribute tutorials for that, I will create a custom section kind of like Flash 5, Flash MX, etc. just for 3D Studio Max!

btw: I'm working on a tutorial about the text captions that appear when you hover over some links :)

April 29th, 2002, 08:46 AM
Oops, sorry pom, I forgot to notice it. I didn't know it was attached with the spring prototype tutorial :) Sorry about that! I'll get this one as well as the Flash 5 Drawing tutorial up ASAP.

BTW: Your drawboard tutorial is the best tutorial I have ever seen on the net. I've spent a lot of time simply drawing pictures in it: www.kirupa.com/temp/pom_image.png (http://www.kirupa.com/temp/pom_image.png) (I was bored hehe)

Hey Pom,
My mind is melting away haha. I see what you mean about the tutorial :) Actually, I used a mouse to draw that. I found it easier to tilt the picture at an angle because it makes it easier to draw with the mouse =)

I do have a few suggestions about tutorials

1) As a newbie I have a huge problem "linking" the site around, and by that i don't mean URLs to other sites... i mean linking a button to a movie clip in another side frame and such... I hope i'm being clear, i apologize for my bad terminology!
2) I know that vectors are the best pictures to have in flash but for a picture gallery I use bitmaps... I noticed that the bitmaps in flash look pretty blurry... how do we import photoshop pictures into flash?

I'm not sure if this applies to bitmaps, but if you right-click on a bitmap in the Library panel, and click "Properties", you can choose wheter to "smooth" the picture or not...

If i could get my server to work with my ASP code I would do some. I'm going to get into some loading variable from a database, and saving variables to a database and text etc etc, but I have to wait until I get homefrom school. I have finals coming up next week and I need to study.

What ever tutorial you choose to do, try to use more general examples. The XML tutorial is very good, it is far more thorough than I would ever expect. But the wrinkles in files like Squirrell act like a smoke screen to the primary concepts. If the examples could illustrate just the concept and not muddy things with cool stuff like the disappearing menu and the dynamically loaded menu items, neat as that is, learning would transfer better. Too many new concepts will dizzy small minds like mine. The more basic the example, the more generalizable it is. And that is exactly what a learner needs, because they will probably never make the cool device you are thinking of.

i'd really love someone to do a full on tutorial to show how this sort of site is done:

http://www.dubko.com

how the pages resize etc. Also how your arrow is taken over at the start is amazing - that could be a tutorial in itself i suppose.

always been fascinated by this - it must be tutorialised here i feel.

It's all good ;) The resize feature that you can find in many sites and scotty's version of the photo gallery is something that I may cover later. Right now, with what little spare time I have, I am writing basic Flash 8 tutorials.

Regarding the mouse effect, it's nothing complicated. The site just hides your existing mouse using Flash's built-in property for hiding the mouse. They then use a pre-made graphic of a mouse to simulate your real mouse. They don't take control of your mouse at all. For example, if you refresh the page and move your mouse to the taskbar or to a non-browser window, you will see that your mouse cursor still appears.

You know, now that this was brought up again. It would be cool to see a tutorial on multiple saving techniqes within flash (any flash version would do, but I would hope MX 2004 is one ;) ). For example, saving things into cookies, or whatever could be thought up. There was a few more ideas I had, but I forgot them when I was on FlashPlayer.com helping 3 people at once. :cantlook:
Edit: It seems the cookie idea was already done, I was just typing things in wrong. But still, other style would be cool alond with other ideas. :)

kirupa, it grabs hold of my arrow wherever it is on screen - whether it is outside of the browser or not.

with regards to the stretching, i have used scotty's photo gallery and its great yeah. The dubko version seems a little different though beacuse it is not simply the animation of loaded in jpg images, everything is in the swf including the navigation. whenever i have tried doing it this way, the pixel fonts get stretched too which is not good. :)

I cant think of any simple tutorials for flash 8 at the moment. but i will try when i eventually get it.

all the best,
Marley.

scotty
October 9th, 2005, 09:21 AM
Marley, the animation of the navigation is covered as well in that long resizement thread ;)
Not sure if it was with pixel fonts, but the trick with them is keep them on whole pixels during the animation.

An advanced email PHP in flash MX form would be good - where we can have stuff like "* required field" if the user doesn't fill out the info correctly

scotty, it was quite early in your thread that i looked at the fla, you may well have done another version which i have not seen - i'll take a look. :)

the version i followed allowed me to load in jpg images that resize very nicely.

Right now, with what little spare time I have, I am writing basic Flash 8 tutorials.

Kirupa has great tutorials especial at the basic level, but I am finding myself hitting a wall when it comes to the more complicated stuff because it is hard to find, and the tutorials out there that aren't at Kirupa usually suck.

Here are some tutorial request:
1. A good tutorial on the zoom effect seen at bbdo.com. (not the sofake zoom tutorial which is floating around)
2. a tutorial breaking down how this works: http://www.levitated.net/daily/levTextSpace.html and appling it to actual objects on the stage (not just AS controled text).
3. Many other things that I can only dream of in my head b/c i lack the AS programming skills to create from scratch.

Thanks, keep up the great work! :D

I would love to a see a walk through guide on how to add a paypal shopping cart to a flash site.

The instructions on the paypal site are aimed at HTML only and the tech support don't know either.

Ive found a few posts in the forums addressing the issue but i would like pictures!

i think we should have a continuation of the xml gallery. However instead of the scroller, use the grid where you can have 3 columns and 3 rows. Also a page system in case you have more then 9 pictures and a scroller. Basically something like simple viewer. That would be a great tutorial to be on Kirupa.com which is for me far better then flashkit.com

I would love to learn how to add pictures to a flash slideshow from an existing database of pictures on the web. My client has a set of pictures that they are uploading to a photogallery that we have made for them and I want these same pictures to appear in a flash slideshow on their website. As they add or subtract pictures from their gallery, so will the pictures be added or subtracted to their slideshow.
An example of such a photogallery can be found at:

I am rather new to flash.

If you are planning tutorials relating Physics see the link -- a tutorial explaining the concepts in physics and how we can apply it via actionscript... It will be better if the tutorials are like this. Because we people have no chance of formal education in this particular field ( Physics-Flash ). Some books are available ..But they are toooo costly for us to buy. So, think of detailed tutorials.
