Ok so i'v finally got around to making a new site.

http://www.ngdlondon.com

What do you think? Took me like 2 days to make, personally I really like it, the best site i'v made to date.

Eleven2 - what an awesome host, I signed up and my account was active the same day!! Even when I bought a domain with it!

Oh and thanks to ya3 for the cool glass image :thumb:

Nice and clean. Very professional. The drink's bubles need something they dont look very real as white dots... mabey make them a tad more grey. like |-| much. Nice work for 2 days love the transitions. Nice music btw.

thats all folks

Not bad, but why did you use a pop up window? Are you going to show some sample's of your work or just have txt? I normally don't like music on sites, but that stuff rocks! Who is it?

Whats a "full Flrash site" (in portfolio)....it is some disease you can get from flash? ;)

Its quite cool, good for 2 days, I like the glass, but I don't think the pastel greens of the content box complement the glass very well. I'd imagine a more punchy green, and perhaps limit the pallette of greens being used too.

I'm not a fan of pop ups or all capitals, but thats a pretty subjective point you can feel free to ignore ;)

lol, it's a typo. Better change it :P

I like pop-up windows, and i'v never done a site with one before, thought i'd use one this time.

Yeah I am going to put samples/images of the sites in the portfolio, this is just the first version. I don't have any images or samples here at Uni, gotta wait until i'm back down in London on Friday (they are on my other PC).

The music is 'So What' by Miles Davis.

I liked the site, graphics, design, layout. The thing I did not like is the pop up window, I don't really like those for opening the main page. But other then that I realy liked it, and that tall glass of maybe lime soda made me thursty!

Design is greaty great skills, very clean. Oh yeah your contact link doesn't seem to work. was it supposed? nIIICE THOUGH.

photo is cool

misspelled because in opener text

you have artifacts on your masking - little pieces are sticking up over the text

lime glass is cool looking

id think about ditching the content area colors and just going black green and white for content - make it really bold -

your content kind of gets muddied together with that color scheme - black white and green would look pretty tight with that glass in my opinion

Changed the spelling.

Changed the masking.

What do you mean about the content areas? Are you talking about taking away the green backing bit?

That's a glass of Midori and Lemonade from a photo-shoot I did for a cafe, fyi.

Took forever to load for me, then again I'm shaped to 64k for the next few days. I like the animated bubbles on the glass, and the overall design is nice and clean. Transitions are good, but I'd make them a little snappier - feels kinda sluggish atm. Not a huge fan of the font (AvantGarde or Century Gothic or whatever), but it fits nicely with the site. I personally would go for something like Myriad Pro, Frutiger, Flux or Helvetica Neue. And why is all the body text rasterized? Why not just type the text directly in Flash? You'll get smaller filesizes and, in most cases, nicer-looking type. Oh, and try using a tiny pixel-font for the © notice in the bottom-right corner - it'll look neater.

Other than that... I like :)

oh yeah, sorry read out of context, my mouse over and nothing I'm affraid, nada. tried it 3 times.

June 6th, 2006, 11:21 AM
Wierd, it's just the same as the other buttons, do they work?

@ya3:
Yep Century Gothic :)

I didn't type it into flash becuase when I did, the text just game out blurry.

The animations are fairly sluggish on slower PCs, I used a ton of PNG files for them. And when you move your mouse over a button during a transition it gets a bit choppy...

I was just about to change the font for the bottom right hand corner :)

Yes - just a plain white background using the same color scheme you were - with a nice font and bold greens and blacks.

things just kind of get washed out compared to the stark contrast of the glass

I think the bottom-right copyright text needs to be embedded and aliased. Also, the hitTest for the buttons seems a little dodgy. Cool folio though. :D

Did you get permission to use a Miles Davis song? I ask because I always have good ideas for music but am unsure of copyright infringements.

Is it just here in my end of the universe the slide bar moves a pixel to the left when activated and dragged ?

I think you should put just a few pictures in amongst all the text. Just a thought.

Except from that... Nice work !

Butters
June 6th, 2006, 01:25 PM
Yeah it does move, I dunno why tho.

Yeah i'm going to put more samples of work in there when I get back to Lonon this weekend.

i think it's nice.

your portfolio doesn't have links to any work, just text descriptions. are they made up?

issue: when you click HELP it opens up a pop up window. the first problem you address in your help section is "Nothing happens when I click enter." - then you explain that it's a pop up window. the problem is that your HELPO section is also in a pop up window. so if a user is having a problem with the ENTER button not popping up the window, they are going to have the same problem when trying to open the HELP pop up. no?

Made up? No they are actually projects I did. I didn't put links becuase they arn't online anymore.

I'm going to add stuff to that section soon.

fair enough, maybe you could put those sites that are no longer online in an archive on your own server so that you can link to them and people can see your work.

i know i'd like to. :pirate:

Yeah what i'm gonna do is put up a full-sized image of the site, so that people can pretty much see what the whole site looked like.

The site is pretty nice visually, but there isn't much to interact with once one is on the content pages (email address can't be selected/clicked on, etc.).

The green glass image reminds me of the Bacardi Mojito site:

Just wanted to make 2 quick suggestions about the copy on the site.

In my opinion it might be an idea to remove the welcome message altogether and replace it with the "About" section, because the first sentence doesn't really sit well with me. The first thing I thought when I read it was "I'll try and fit you in between lectures" rather than "I'm eager to work so give me money to make your stuff look good".

Also, on the "About" section, I wanted to suggest more or less swapping the first two paragraphs so it reads more like:

"I'm Noah...I'm 19...I have years of experience...I use Photoshop, Flash, etc."

"I live in London...go to uni...study blah blah blah"

"My full profile..."

I thought it would be best make sure your most important assets are first and foremost on that section, as it's the only paragraph you can read in its entirety without scrolling.

Hope that helps

Yeah good points, i'v made the following changes:

- Made the e-mail address clickable in the contact section.
- Changed order of paragraphs in about section.
- Re-wrote welcome section.
- Changed help section (no longer a pop-up).
- Added legal section.

I think the site looks really good. Nice and clean, and great color. The fx you used are nice too...but I think theyd look a lot better if you removed some frames and made it punchier--they all seem to be waiting thier turn to much (the ones when its first getting put together). Not sure if the rollovers are intentionally slower on fades in/out--but thats something again I think would look a lot better a bit faster. But anyways, yea other then the speed of the fx I think it looks great.

good work I like alot:)

I love how simple it is and that pic of the cup. :) One thing I kinda didn't like is that you have to wait for the button animation for you to be able to click on it to go there.

Butters
June 7th, 2006, 06:35 AM
Really? You shoulden't have to, i'v put the code for the external loading throughout the animation...

I'm still working on getting the rollovers smooth, does anyone know how I can lower the quality of the PNGs? I think that's why they are slow/choppy.

Butters
June 7th, 2006, 08:42 AM
Ok i'v changed the rollovers. It's now got a slider.

Alot smoother, it dosen't lag out the transitions when you rollover and the rollovers arn't slow. The rollover sound is also more accurate than before.

i like the site but i would really suggest on ur next site make it way bigger. i hate having to scroll alot while browsing portfolios. it would look alot better if it was taller. i like the site but i didnt love it. i also dont like how there are no images or links or anything in the portfolio. that seems really weird. anyways, nice job on the site but i really think for future you need to make web pages alot bigger

Very nice work :)!

I'm not sure about the font though, or the all caps approach. I'd like to see more vibrant colours and faster transitions.

Other than that, the rest is good. Keep it up!

The link rollovers are a lot better now!

Something else I noticed that in the folio the works you show arent linked--would be a good idea to link those up (if you hadnt already planned on doing so)
(edit--oops sorry didnt notice^^^)
