After years of struggling to get my portfolio site up, I've finally got it to a point where it's mostly up. (as in up enough to show others)
I kind of rushed it a little because I'm applying for a couple jobs this week.
I was trying to go for a minimalist feel where the portfolio pieces are the star of the show. I know it's not finished, and turned out to be super-simple, but I would still love some feedback from some real experts. [bowing]
Here's a linky : www.DesignerScott.com (http://www.designerscott.com/)
Can't wait!

Looks pretty cool. ;) Great job man. I like how simple it is. The thing is... I don't really know what each of the bottom buttons are... Kind of made me go through all of them... lol.

The cut out on the "take back the night" thing looks kinda corny because of low image quality.

I like it, very good.

Change the low image quality and it'd be great.

I like the simplicity of the site.
Well in each section the letters are quite big which distracted me from the image being shown. one more thing. it'll be nice if you put some short description (tool tip kinda), so that user know what's where.

Thanks for the great feedback everyone.
I'm going to go back and up the image quality, delete the intro page, and decrease the text size. (oh yah, and fix the typo). Is there anything else that can easily be fixed up to make it look better?
BTW, I coded all of the actionscript myself, and the only animated stuff using the timeline is the "DS" fill and the two portfolio animations.
As far as quality, can you all make some good recommendations about how big at most each portfolio piece should be?
Thanks again!

*Sorry about the double post! I was walking and writing at the same time, and tripped over an air molecule, hence double tapping the button*
A small price to pay for working on a tablet pc all the time though :ne:

Its a pretty nifty looking site--I especially like the start animations! And, even though I hate using that type of menu on macs, I really like it on this site, works great.
Only thing that bothers me is how some of the actual content areas look--I dont know if its the composition of them maybe--some of them just seem a little off. It would end up being a lot more work probably--but it would be cool at some point to have all of the areas have a neat little animation like the wedding section--might look nice.

original and simple though--i like it.

it would be cool at some point to have all of the areas have a neat little animation like the wedding sectionThat is kind of the plan, but I really needed to get something functional for the jobs I'm applying to. I also struggled with the images that I have, because I'm shopping around for a good camera, and the photos for both of the currently animated pieces turned out like crap, so the animations look better.

On to the help... I'm having issues with how the images look. Becuase I have the page set to scale, I think that many of the images look like crap when resized in flash. Is there a way around this or something I'm doing wrong.
Right now I have the images as imported PNGs, and have changed the Flash JPG quality setting to 100, but I'm not sure if this is the best way.

I really liked the overall design.
The only problem I see is the fact that the sites scales to fit the window.
Vectors look great but bitmaps suffer a lot.

i like the design
except that you dont know what each button does
also i love how you made it change when you resize the window

Vectors look great but bitmaps suffer a lot.
Is that just a fact, or are there ways around it though? I haven't been able to find anything out about it. I know that there must be a way???

afaik you can have good quality scalable bitmaps in flash by using very high resolution images (about twice the expected average size). Of course, that can be a good solution for a cd-rom but not really for a website.
Sorry, I don't have other ideas for the moment.

'Designerscott', love the name :D

I found the body copy to be a bit large - if you're going to use text at that size, it probably take a look at some other typefaces that work well at medium-large size, as well as aligning it somewhat to other elements on the page - it just seems to be missing a bit of uniformity.

Maybe bring in a background texture of some sort that fades to where the content is... something to draw the eye into what is currently a fairly open plain space.

Love that menu though, i've got an unhealthy obsession with them... *goes and plays some more*

the word "southwestern" is spelled wrong in the lizard section. i also agree that maybe the buttons should have a text description attached with it. other than that, looks good.

The menu is from Flashloaded.com, the text is blurry, the photos, as mentioned need a lot of improvment and do not do well on large screens. Having said that I like the icons.

after having read all the comments thus far, i still like and appreciate the site's simplicity, for it is catchy. i LOVE the navigation on the bottom, being a 1.5 year mac user :D, and as far as the bm's (bitmaps) are concerned, they could indeed do with a makeover as far as quality goes. but i love the intro with the line forming the initials of the site to the actual site name :thumb2:
