the title says it all :P
critique is welcome. i know there are no shadows, and lighting is probably bad, but i couldn't help. i, again, almost lost my file...
this time, i was mainly playing around with texturing... which was pain, imo.

Well its better than I could ever do... since I don't do any 3d work, heh.
Looks good to me except that little part at the top of the table where the shadow doesnt seem to match the rest of the section.

Make the vase thicker :P its only faces eh?
Build it up on the lather editor- or what ever it is called in max! :)

um...sorry, but i couldn't figure out which was the water:(
ø
May 12th, 2006, 08:51 AM
Doesn't the water look a bit unrealistic in where it is "spilled". I mean if you think of where the vase has falled. And the edges of the water has got some weird twists and turns. But other than that its not so bad is it? :)

looks ok.... turn on shadows and check "caustics" in the render menu. That'll make the light reflect through the glass like it's suppost to and add extra realism to the the water :)

Here's a little bit of info on reflections (http://www.cgarchitect.com/resources/tutorials/smoke3d/tutorial17.asp), the guy talks about wtaer a bit too.
Water, glass, and the like are tricky things to do at first. Doesn't look too bad tho, keep it up

What is it?
The water looks strange like a board. The other thing, whatever it is, just needs shine and shadow.
It's sort of off in terms of geometry I think... At least it looks of to me...

Yes. Wow... Nice job. I like the table holder. You made that table holder in this time? Or you had made it before? Anyways I declare war. I want to make a competition, someone has to make something and then who's ever looks better wins. :)

May 12th, 2006, 09:07 PM
lol thanks, yes i made the bottom in that time... jsut a twist modifier on a tube that was duplicated :)
here's another render with brighter lights, you cacn see the water better in this one

come on guys, don't make me cry :*( i'm a newbie at 3d. :P
but, thanks so much guys, they look awesome...
3d Nirvana, how did you make that table? (edit: i mean how you got that uneven look) and could you, if possible, post how you got those good reflection? and how you did the texture?
i know i'm asking a lot, but i want to learn.
thanks. :)
3d Nirvana
May 12th, 2006, 09:52 PM
lol sure no problem, before i can help with the textures... what program are you using?
and with the bottom of the table i took a tube (cylinder) and added a twist modifier to it. I made sure that my tube had only about 4 or 5 segments (I wanted it to have a nice bend in the middle then be able to straighten out) when i applied the modifier. The low polycout also made the tube kind of kinky and wrinkly because it couldn’t make a smooth curve without enough polys. I then applied a really small amount of noise to the mesh to make it look like it had the bumps like the wood did. Finally I deleted the mesh history (so it collapses into just a shape instead of saving the changeable attributes for the twist) and applied a smooth modifier that added more polygons but didn’t smooth it out completely.
The end result is a knarley looking piece of wood :)
Edit: i read through the other posts and see that you use 3ds max. I use maya but i used to be good in max :). lets see here, is there a raytracing option in your render settings? or on the light possibly? that will make your shadows come out a lot better. Also there should be a slider to increase reflectivness in your texture, look for that too :)

what the heck?
anyways, thanks.
The post was deleted. Basically someone just posted something like "joiwefhkb"
I'd join the batte but then I'd have to reinstall max and im too lazy to do that. Try using clothrayes and have the water flowing off the table aswell.

May 12th, 2006, 10:38 PM
Well here we go... I actually did some other things not seen on the render because they kind of came out bad. Ignore the cup... lol. I concentrated more on the table and the water... I think I could have done the water better though.

looks good everyone

May 13th, 2006, 11:30 PM
thanks guys, lol now that I look at my model the table top is jsut a tad off center.... but the render looks more off center because the glass is bending the light or something :)
DOF = Depth of Field btw.... aka the blur in the distance
that was fun CriTiCeRz good fight :)
Edit: wow sorry kdd, i jsut realized how much this was hijacked... i'm happy to answer any other questions :)

oh god, come on man, no way. this was like the best thing. and sorry it took me a while to get back to you. i tried out your methods, and i'm working on mine. it certainly looks much better. :) thank you very much. i appreciate your help.

very nice nirvana, to me the water still looks too thick, or maybe just too contained.. hmm maybe i should get a glass plate and spill some water on it.
3d Nirvana
May 14th, 2006, 02:32 AM
lol ok kdd cool :)
soulty- thanks, I agree about the water thing. It's odd though, the actuall model for the water is jsut about as thin as a plain. I think I have to change the viscosity (is that the right word), or how much it bends the light. I'll mess with some things and see if I can make it look better
.soulty
May 14th, 2006, 02:44 AM
the water should have a shadow within the shape like a inner shadow to give it a bubble like look, at the moment it looks like a almost opaque drop shadow or outer emboss is giving it the illusion it is thick.

May 14th, 2006, 03:59 AM
thanks to you guys, i was able to create this. still have to do lighting, and other objects... :) imo, it looks much better than the first one, but then again, i spent more time on this, or rather i know more now... thanks again. critique is welcome...
do you guys know any way to remove reflection on top part of this glass table? it may be due to the thickness of the glass...
edit: it looks more like oil than water.

May 14th, 2006, 08:44 AM
firstly, get rid of the sharp extrude on the water and the lighting is completely messed up. also, the table's glass isnt sitting on the center of the stand.
dude, keep at it. Id say rather submit a more completed version of your work next time. This looks more like youve followed a very basic tutorial and submitted it for critique. Criticerz's is more what youre aiming for obviously.

looking better. I liked the actual water on your first one, but the table is much better on this one :).
for texturing, make a checkerbox pattern in photoshop and apply it to everythign that you need to texture. Then mess with the uv's till non of the boxes ar distorted. Then you can apply the actual texture you want and it will fit on the modle perfectly.
For the base of the table I would try using a cylindrical map or just a plainer map on the x axis.
Let me see if my max license is still working and I can help a little more what are they up to version wise? I'm still on 5 lol

after opening max again after years of not touching it I kinda like it lol. I forgot about it's soft selction thingy and everything....

Thank you everyone. 3D Nirvana is doing some nice things... When I get home... If I don´t have homework I will try to make a tutorial, the problem is that I use to use 3Ds Max... but I tried getting it again and had some problems, so now I´m on Cinema 4D... if anyone interested on tutorials here just comment here and I will happily make one, either video or picture... The next two weeks I´ll be terribly busy, I have tests every single day. In summer, oh boy, I will make tutorials like crazy. Hopefully you guys can wait a little. :) So yeah, if anyone needs Cinema 4D tutorials... just post here.
kkd. I like it... just some comments on it. Don´t complicate yourself on putting textures on the table for now... That´s the last thing you do. Concentrate on the water looking good, I know you need to put a texture on it... lol. I don´t really think that the table is matching... Like... You put those pieces of wood... and then metal... I think it would look good either wood or metal. You did an awesome job and you definetly have improved. The table is a little bit too thick. Other than that everything is good.
3D Nirvana. Man... I´m loving what you did and thanks for explaining the DOF thing... lol. I think I´m going to make a brand new model, actually maybe I make a kitchen later on. It will show all examples... and it will have lights. I can´t wait till school finishes so I can start doing everything I want and not have my mind on homework and tests... lol. Well hopefully this can keep going so other people can learn from both of us.

well, after a lot of work, here it is. i still don't have lighting because it messed up some stuff. guys, thank you so much. i must say, i've learned so much just from this... it was a lot of fun.
btw, how do you guys like the flower vase? :P sorry, there are no flowers...
Great work kdd, 3dn, crit
thanks. :)
crit and 3dNirvana, thanks for all the info and critique.

kdd. Nice job there I like the reflections. You did a better looking water this time. You have really improved. I seriously don't know what that thing in the middle is. There is some confusing stuff going on there. Nice basement, I wish I could really see it well. By the way, I found some keys very very useful while using 3Ds Max. Hold the scroll button and move the mouse and the figure moves. You can use CTRL+Left click for other stuff... try things that can make you work easily and faster. I'm proud of you... hehe.
3D Nirvana. I think it would be really fun to do. Let's help kdd more and see how good he turns out. Hope he can participate in the battle too. :)

Yeah, I agree. That over-shiny metal makes it hard to see... It is supposed to be a holder for "stuff". I've attached this image so you can see better, this time taken from a diff. view, and without the shiny metal texture.
And yeah, I use those shortcut keys very frequently. :)
Hope he can participate in the battle too.
I'm all for it. We just need a theme now...
