There are indeed a lot of built in features and filters to Photoshop, and you shouldn't find it too difficult to pick up the basics.

There's a lot of good tutorials out there to help you start out, like www.thewebmachine.com . Of course it does take time to become a master. :)

Practice is the thing, really. It's certianly a worthwhile investment.

PS 7 is definitely the best bitmap program on the market, and although it might be pricey (if you dont have student offers) it's essential... as to illustrator i dont know; never tried it...

Both are great applications. They work together perfectly. Photoshop for all your pixel based designs and illustrator for vector based work, such things as logos and stationary. I use illustrator to draw out my website design concepts before i go into flash, and you can export to flash or to psd from illustrator :beam: Have fun!

Yes, agree completely! Besides Flash MX, PhotoShop 7 and Illustrator 10 are my two most valuable applications. Whilst Illustrator can be daunting at first, take time to learn it as you'll realise how much time you can save when designing layouts. And yes, you can export the Illustrator (.ai) files to SWF format very quickly and easily...
