View Full Version : Who is tired of useless, boring, non-sensical, pointless polls?

lostinbeta

I know I am. All these polls are driving me up a wall.

Just because you are bored doesn't give anyone the right to create polls that are utter non-sense and abuse the rights of the forum.

Polls are here for a reason, not just as something to do whenever you feel bored.

I voted for #3 - only because I dont think it's fair to delete all the polls that people have already voted on. We just have to have some standards set is all.

This is a fun place and you should be scared to post any thing - you should just think about it before you post it. Common Sence goes a long way...

You have to admit - this place hasnt been "as fun" as it was about 2 or 3 months ago. It's still a great place but the random section is becoming more and more non random - it's becoming pretty darn predictable.

The point is that this place is getting out of hand and this was just made to prove a point. Stop with the stupid threads and post things that are fun and entertaining - not because you are board and don't know what else to do.

No. This kind of stuff makes you wade through pages of useless bored garbage, just to try to find a fun thread, or useful thread. There are several "regulars" that don't hang out anymore just because of immature little brats that don't play well with other adults...

I'm not picking on anyone in particular, let's just stop it now, okay?

I have to agree with pinx. It's too strict up in here. You guys made a random forum, so therefore, we should be post whatever we want.. you know?

I'm not trying to go against what you have going now, but you gotta have some leeway now and again. It's like if we look at you the wrong way, something will happen.

reverendflash
April 28th, 2003, 04:04 PM
no, we are just tired of random becoming spamdom. Random is not a chat room, and is not there for anyone to "post what they want."

Sorry if this offends anyone, but it is the way this forum has been since day one, and we as mods aim to keep it that way.

Seriously, random is much more fun without people creating threads because they are bored.

Alex - it's been tried before and it didnt work. Look where we are righ tnow. We are all old enough to register and post on a board right? well we should all be old enough to understand the concept that POST COUNT DOESNT MATTER.

The random board is fun, there are a lot of great people here and it's a great place to post. But all you have to do is look back on the last couple weeks and see... it's out of control. Crazy posts are fun - but stupid aimless posts arent.

Lets put it this way, do any of you want to pay for extra bandwidth or another database to hold all the spam BS! I like random, but seriously there are so many threads I don't even have time to get to look at because I have to filter through all the spam threads first. Pinx I am not scared of you at all, if I wasn't a moderator I would have continued, but as being a moderator it would be wrong of me.

I think we all need to remember that kirupaforums is not a democracy. There are mods to keep order, there is not a popular vote, there is not an inherant right to post anything.

Kirupa is a very, very lenient person who gives his time without any kind of monitary gain whatsoever. For him, can't we just be mature enough to do this?

Rebellion is cool, but for some things it is just stupid...

Kitiara

There is a simple solution to this.

No pointless polls. If you want to see what people think of PCs vs Mac, then run a search and find the thread instead of starting a new one.

Don't post to tell us you're going to bed. Random is a place for general threads, certainly, but let's all just be sinsible here.

If you're having a (relatively) pointless conversation with someone, you can always use the PM system. It leaves the forums less clogged. Just remember to delete your Sent Items folder so you don't fill up your mailbox.

Just use common sense. I know mods can sound harsh and horrible and unfair sometimes. We are. That's the not-so-glamourous side of what we do here. If we ask people to stick to some simple rules, please don't take it personally. The same rules apply to us too, and if you think we're guilty of the same infringements, then let us know politely and we will curb it.

I have spoken. Anyone going to argue with me? :cyborg:

I'm going to ignore your attitude, since you haven't been here very long. Yes, this place survived a long time before you found random. The mods do not take out personal vendettas against anyone.

yes, you do have to try to make us mad, we are very forgiving.

However, if you continue to harass, or just make fun of something we are trying to accomplish, then you will anger one of us.

That is not good.

Come on, why are you being an instigator? Is this a battle you really want to wage?

All we ask is to follow the rules. If you don't want to, please post somewhere else. So why are you being a pain? Just because you are bored, and you think this is fun?

Well, I completely agree, perhaps I misunderstood the whole point a bit...
All I'm saying is that mods will have to be fair in categorizing threads as ok or not ok, which is easy, *except* in the Random forum. Like you say, Random should be fun, relaxing and entertaining. Not stupid. And this counts for the threads, but also for the mods' decisions.

I think it's fair to say that the reason the mods were chosen is because they are fair and smart individuals. I dont think you will see them making "stupid" decisions - just decisions that help the board. That said - no one is perfect, that's why there is more than one mod...

This is a great place, it's just getting a little off track right now...

Wow, a lot happened since I was gone.

I read through all the pages and I noticed everyone likes to hide behind the phrase "It is RANDOM after all"... and yeah... Random it is. But Random was meant to be a place to chill out and talk about interesting entertaining things, not a place to go when you are bored to create a thread like "I am bored...". And as for the polls.... a poll already existed for the "who loves who" theme, but yet 2-3 other polls were created on the same subject right after that!?!?! WHAT WAS THE POINT!?!?! Then there are polls on who likes Mad TV or SNL... I mean seriously... WHO CARES ABOUT THAT!?!?! It was obvious they were just bored so they felt the would create a new thread to take up space on Kirupas database.

People are saying we are too strict here, but I don't really think we are. I think we are sometimes too lenient actually. If we were too strict we wouldn't even allow a Random or Ordered forum.

If you check out forums like Flash Devils... now they are strick. Flash Devils is a good forum i've recently come across thanks to ahmed and there is useful information there, but they are STRICT. If you want to call us strict, you should just check out the new member PM you get when you sign up for the forum....

Dear member,

Thank you for registering on our Flash Community.
We would like to show you some of the rules we handle on the board.

Before you post a problem or question, please search first. That way we all save a lot of time, answering to questions or problems that already been asked so many times before.
It is NOT allowed to cross-post. When you do that it gives a moderator the reason to delete the posts. When it happens more often and you ignore a moderators warning, it can lead that we decide to deny you access to the board.
It is NOT allowed to post replies or even new threads for the only reason to give more attention to your original thread.
When you found a thread usefull, then rate it. This way we all save a lot of time, searching for the good ones.
It is NOT allowed to have a whole post title or content in CAPS LOCK. The post will be deleted instantly.
It is NOT allowed to post illegal things on our board. That includes links, downloads, cracks, serials, screenshots, quotes, or other things that are illegal to post on our board. When such things happen we will instantly BAN you from our board!
When you place a signature cq. footer in your post or thread, it is not allowed to exceed the following size: 200x60 pixels. Also we do not allow commercial banners or in anyway promote sites or companies that are related to vulgar things.
You always have to follow the instructions a moderator gives you. A moderator looks after that everyone lives by the rules and keeps this community a nice place to be. So when a moderator comes to you and tells you you are not living by the rules you need to adjust yourself or you will get expelt from the community.

We hope you will have a wonderful time here :D.

Kind Regards,
FlashDevils Community - CREW

Please note that I am not putting down Flash Devils, I have skimmed the forum a bit this past week and have found very useful information, but I merely posted that just to show you that we are not as strict as we can be.

lol.. yeah lost...

When I first joined this forum i was just SHOCKED by how many threads were created that have NOTHING AT ALL to do with Flash. Not even computers or technology in general. I think anyone who calls the mods here 'strict' are clearly WRONG. We don't mind a general thread every one in a while, or posting something funny, but if a memeber posts nothing but that kind of content, I as a moderator would have to warn him. There are tons of this kind of member on this forum, no need to mention names:). We even had a member who did post appropriate content, but posted too much, and he would make 3 consecutive posts instead of editing his posts. He was banned, 3 times for instance. Now that is strict. :)

one last time.

do you want to stay here, or do you wish to post elsewhere?

your conduct is shameful in a play school, let alone at University.

ahmed: EXACTLY!

pinx: It isn't about you pointing out "Expelt", its about many of the statements you make/have made.

What some of the other moderators said is really good - these polls and useless threads do have a tendency to drive sane, regular members off the wall.

Here is a good test to see if there is spam - take ANY thread that is more than 1-2 pages long. Look at the topic of the FIRST post and look at the topic of the LAST post within that thread. More than likely, the topic has swerved into something that the original poster was not interested in.

When a topic gets derailed by one or two members who, instead of using AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, Private Messaging, etc., decide to have a personal chat room in someone else's thread, THAT is a problem. THAT is spam.

In the future, think about whether a post, poll, etc. is fun or useful. There are some threads in here that are neither - just something that somebody posted that interests nobody but themselves.

Pinx - do show the mods and other members more respect. Does it really matter if a word is a word? Do you want us to go through your posts and find misspelled words, etc. =)

Cheers!

Well said kirupa, this should straighten out a lot of things!

just wondering, why not just make a set of strict rules for posting? :)

Alex
April 28th, 2003, 06:36 PM
that would be good ahmed, but i was thinking if there was a way to automatically make it so the thread closes after a member has posted over 10.

but there could also be a down side to this to...
:(

Well ahmed, I find it wrong to punish 95% of all members for the doings of only 5%. I'd rather have an open, fun place to discuss instead of creating stricter rules. More than likely, those who spam now will probably spam with the new rules.

Cheers!

Well said Kirupa - and thank you for not enforcing some crazy posting rules on the rest of us.

Sometimes things like this need to happen to get things back in order...

I don't like 'em, but I follow an easy solution: dont read 'em - its not too hard to avoid clicking on a thread ;)

True, but it is keeping some of the regulars away, and I am tired of wading through a plethera of adolescent teenagers clogging up the forum with "who loves me" polls.

Well put, and I do agree. I guess I tend to be non-confrontational with my solutions. ;)

Also not being a MOD I dont feel the need to look through such threads, as I am sure you do, just as anyone with your responsibility on this forum should.

However I must say that if members really do not enjoy such juvinille (man I wish I could spell) threads they should aviod giving them any response. I dont think such threads will continue without posts. I know that if I put up a "who loves me" thread that got no votes I'd be reluctant to do anything in a similar fashion in the future.

I agree that people should not do this to begin with, but as history has shown they will.

If I could prevent it I would, but the only means I have is to ignor them and not give them the credit of my response.

Peace

PS, Check my post in the Kirupa love poll :flower:

Also I would hope that a regular would not be shunned away by a few bad apples. JMHO

thanks Ryall...

I know you are not one for confrontation... I also saw your vote...

We just have a few bad apples we need to coral... I would love to see the regulars back in random...

It used to be fun here.

Well yeah, that is true, but see... but most of the people in the group of people that do this are the ones that feed the content of the useless trheads, its like a mini gang of sorts. They feed eachothers pointless posts.... so there isn't really a way to just say... well then don't reply to it.

Ryall

"mini gang of sorts" I agree.

There are a few bad apples to coral (goes without saying, but I agree)... I was just giving my advice to other "regular" members. ;)

I cant lock posts, I cant edit them, but at least I dont have to support them. You're right LOST it is something that is perpetuated by those involved - and no one can stop that. I was simply giving my opinion on what reg. members that agree with you should do. I guess that is all I am saying.

Peace

I agree... and I am also confident that it will be once again. I think it still is, but it requires way too much searching through the crap posted each and every day.

What about Mods locking spammed threat with a warning on the original post, thus creating some sort of hall of the d@mned (or banned =) )
