ive got one for you. I am a very experienced user of illustrator but... it wasnt until i started using Illustrator 10 that i noticed somthing that really annoys me. Somtimes when I drag the mouse cursor to select a bunch of vector shapes, it wont let me move them unless I either select them one at a time or if I de-select one and then reselect it as part of the group. It annoys me very much. never used to happen in 8 or 9. why why why. other than that i am pretey happy with it.

How can you save a file and open it in Photoshop?
.soulty
May 4th, 2003, 04:45 AM
there many ways, you can export to photoshop in illustrator, or you can copy and past from illustrator to photoshop, or you can just open a ai file in photoshop and it will open (you need to check some options it bring up). Best to save as a eps when importing to photoshop.
I use export to photoshop or just copy and paste between the two programs

I have a really ******* question... I came here to open a new thread, to ask what you people do in illustrator. When I make a site, I work with Photoshop and Flash. But when I look on people's websites, I mostly see: "Created with Photoshop - Illustrator - Flash". So I was going to open up a new thread to ask what you guys do in Illustrator... Than I saw this thread :)
EDIT: hehe, didn't know dumba55 wasn't allowed in here :p

i would be one of them, i make layouts in illustrator, so i can import into flash, keep the vector flowing, for the photoshop part i make backgrounds, and imported images of work.

i was told to
"list the PMS colors specified for the color version" in a logo thing im doing in illustrator.
and i have NO IDEA what that means. i need an english translation!! i looked up PMS colors, and it seems to be a sort of alien code for swatches of colors for stuff like ink??? i found the PMS swatches, so thats cool, but i'm still not clear on something. if i need to use certain colors that aren't in the swatches, then what? can i convert a regular color to a PMS number? and are there file settings like in PS to set the mode? should i have it set in RGB? all the stuff i've been finding online keeps confusing me even more.. i also dunno wtf the color version is. argh!
please help me

Slow down Golgi :-\ PMS colours are spot colours and are used in printing. They are speciality colours and called Pantone colours. You cannot convert your colours into PMS , but you would have to find the closest alternative in the PMS swatches. And if its for printing purposes always work with CMYK. If you need help just ask me , i'll glad to help :)

oh awesome soulty. thanks!!
ok. i understand what PMS colors are now.
a few questions
- how do i make the project in CMYK? i mean, so far i just drew the logo and stuff like normal. do i have to set it to that somewhere?
- are ALL the pantone colors included in the pantone swatch libraries in illust 10?
- when trying to find the matching color, should i use the pantone coated, pantone process, pantone matte or pantone uncoated swatches? my guess would be process, but i'm unsure.
-ok, last thing... i still dunno what "list the PMS colors specified for the color version" means. see, i dunno if that's illustrator lingo cuz i know squat about illustrator. haha. does that insinuate that it should be designed with pms colors? or that i should do regular color, and then just list the matching pms color #s along with the file? what does color version refer to?
thanks so much!!! i really appreciate your help!!!!

File / document color mode / CMYK
:::Yep all the Pantone colors are in Illustrator 10, its a licenced program to use Pantones.
::Which Pantone to use depends on what colour you are going for, and what paper is being used,If its going through a press, either Pantone Process coated, or Pantone Process Uncoated.
:: all colors have a number reference. like a particular blue is
-DS 221-1U (u , stands for uncoated)
while a coated one would be
- DS 208-3 C ( C , stands for coated)
The reason they ask for the names of the colours is because , there are so many different shades and tints of colors in the pantone swatches that is the way it is organised and set up for printing.
Hope this helps :smirk:

ok, awesome. you've been totally helpful. thank you!! i dunno what paper it's gonna be printed on, cuz it's not really for printing, its just a general logo eps, so i assume they will be using it for several different things. :beam:

you cant lock a ai file, but you can lock the objects within it using the lock command - object>lock
You can unlock them in the same way though!
You can also lock the layers too, but neither of these is permenant and cant be used with a password etc..

they will probably want the pantone colour names for use across all there branding and media, to ensure coerance.
If i were you i would name the following to ensure they know the exact colour:
pantone swatchs
cmyk values of each
hex numbers of each
rgb values of each
These should cover all medias (web, print etc)

no i hadnt noticed that, but one of the biggest things that has annoyed me was that in illustrator 8 you could use the colour picker to 'pick' a colour from a placed bitmap, but now you cant!
that however, is my only gripe! the new revamped pathfinder tools work a treat!
:m:
ps. have you seen a beta for v.11 yet?

sorry about digging up a semi-old thead, but i need some help with Illustrator, and i'm thinking someone here can help. I've recently re-installed Illustrator 9.0, and certain things are not the same as i remember them being.
How could i get the color picker back to the way i remember it, which was more like the Photoshop one?
EDIT: pic removed.

What is the main function of illustrator, to make rendered stuff? or make 3d objects?? etc..

illustrator is a very popular "vector" program, it has many uses in almost every aspect of design, from concept pages for flash to coporate Id (business cards, logos, stationary) The main feature of illustrator is that since its a vector based program, work created in illustrator can be scaled to larger sizes without loosing any quality.
