Hey guys, i'm looking to do some 3d modelling and animation work and was wondering just how compatible is Maya and Flash 8?
Could you guys also recommend any other applications I could use?

I don't think there's a render->vector option for getting maya into flash, but I could be wrong. I know for sure Swift3d make plugins for 3DS and Lightwave though, both readily available on teh gr3y m4rk3t.
I've given up on vector personally, I've found bitmaps to be faster and easier to work with. Nowadays I render to a PSD file with an alpha channel then use a photoshop action to strip the backgrounds and resave as a PNG.

I remember reading somewhere that unlike 3dsmax, Maya does not need a 3rd party program like swift for linking with flash. it said it can directly output in flash form.

maya7 has the vector rendering system found in swift3d v3. You can render out your models /scene with that rendering setting and render out to swf format or other.
