painfully stupid question about transform in Photoshop

My girlfriend called me to help her with something in Photoshop, usually I can spit out the answer in two seconds. But, for some reason either:

a.) I'm not understanding her
b.) I'm stupid

Most likely "b"

Anyway, she said that somehow it's as if she has the transform tool on by default for every layer. I told her to hit ctrl+t and it made a solid line transform around the layer, but when she double clicked the transform it went back to the dotted line transform.

Is there a default option to have a transform around your layer at all times?

It sounds like she had the selection tool in use in which case hitting ctrl+t would just switch to the transform tool and double clicking would just revert back to selection which would explain it being in use on every layer... although that seems to easy of an answer.

Try hitting ctrl+d to toggle the selection tool off?

Never heard of either of these tools being on by default though.

yeah its called 'show transform controls', you can select it from your tool option bar at the top of photoshop. With it selected it will always show the transform controls. just tick it off. You can access it when you hit v or have your move tool selected ;)
