Magazine Cover Design Contest
(courtesy of WatchAndLearnPhotoshop.com (http://www.watchandlearnphotoshop.com/) + kirupa.com)

For this contest, your goal will be to design a magazine cover. The following guidelines should help you out:

This contest will end on May 1st!
-
Your image should be 800 pixels wide and 1200 pixels tall.
-
The magazine does not have to be real, and it can be about any topic that you want.
-
Try to make the magazine cover look realistic. Most magazines contain a title, some graphics, some text such as issue number, address label, etc.
-
While many have diverse magazine tastes, for this contest, keep the content appropriate for the audience. Refrain from using offensive, sexual, political, controversial, or inflammatory topics in your magazine cover.
-
You can upload the magazine to the forums by using the forum's built-in Imageshack attach feature, or you can attach your image manually by visiting http://www.imageshack.us (http://www.imageshack.us/) (or your favorite online image host).
-
Your magazine title must be unique. You cannot use the name of an existing magazine in your design.
-
All entries MUST be posted in the Magazine Cover Design (http://www.kirupa.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=135) forum. Create a new thread for your entry, and be sure to use a descriptive title.
-
You can enter as many times as you wish, so don't hold back all of those wacky and/or great designs :beam:Prizes
The prizes are as follows:

1st Place: $110 Paypal + $200 WatchAndLearnPhotoshop (http://www.watchandlearnphotoshop.com/)Video Credit
2nd Place:$70 Paypal
3rd place: $50 PaypalJudging
Entries will be judged on whatever criteria the judges decide to use. Overall, you should expect the quality of the finished piece and how well it resembles a magazine cover to factor heavily in the judging.

Information on the judges will be provided as the deadline approaches.

EDIT: Be sure to thank Berg for donating his previous contest winnings to this contest. All prizes have gone up by $10.

I thought about that, but in the past few years, I don't think more than a handful of those who signed up from this site made Rebbot in time anyway. So I figured, I would help people's egos by providing a task that is actually doable before May 1st.

That's my excuse and I am sticking to it :cowbell:

That question seems a bit silly :P, these obviously aren't going to be used for a real magazine, an 800x1200 image at 300DPI would be about 2.67 x 6 inches, which would make it more of a leaflet. ;)

Jeff Wheeler
April 8th, 2006, 12:07 AM
Well… perhaps he meant the equivalent of 800x1200 in 300dpi? I don't know!

kirupa
April 8th, 2006, 12:12 AM
I'm sure a mod who knows more about dpi can answer instead :) In the end, all I am expecting is an image that is 800x1200 pixels on my screen.

DPI doesn't matter for web images.

I'm in.

simplistik
April 8th, 2006, 12:27 AM
Yea guys... it's 72 dpi, if you're feelin frisky you can do 300dpi... just know it'll be enormous on the web  :D

Me personally I'd do it in 300dpi and then scale it down to help preserve quality though ;)

Jeff Wheeler
April 8th, 2006, 12:55 AM
I know DPI doesn't matter for web-pages… I just don't know much beyond that. ;)

I've never done any print work, so I know nothing about it. :D

Well… perhaps he meant the equivalent of 800x1200 in 300dpi? I don't know!

It doesn't seem logical to convert directly from pixels to dots/inch, if you look at it with a sort of dimensional analysis approach. Dots/inch on on computer screen would be the same thing as pixels/inch, since there isn't another unit that could logically be considered a dot. I've always thought that 72 DPI is an odd measurement, as that many pixels aren't always contained in an inch on a monitor.

Are we allowed to use images not created by us? for example images from a game or movie poster.

of course, credit should be given when due.

I earlier said you can't, but I figure it's not the easiest thing in the world to recreate images such as screenshots, furniture, etc.

Being a newbie here: How often do this kind of contests take place?

Excellent idea by the way! I was more attracted by the web design so far but I gave it a try :) Maybe I'll be able to send in more than just one :) It's all a matter of time...

I just want to make a note about using other ppls artwork. While I don't think it can be avoided obviously... I personally will be judging it heavily on whether you relied to heavily on someone else's artwork, w/o much reguard to the layout, to make your cover good. Not sure about the other mods but that's definately something to take into consideration.

I was previewing some of the other entries and I noticed a lot of copyright images being used...I'm guessing this is not a problem? In other words, it doesn't matter if we use copyrighted or material that is really not ours on the covers?

I'm totally cool with it, though I'm most probably going to do it all on my own. Haven't had much time to get around to it quite yet, but I'll post mine soon...probably this weekend or so.

For those that haven't seen it, here's the American Society of Magazine Editors choice for the best 40 covers of all time, admittedly just American ones though:

http://www.magazine.org/editorial/14408.cfm

What they all have (bar three notable exceptions) are instantly recognisable mastheads and striking cover pictures. In every case, it's a single image that grabs the attention and invariably it's an image of someone rather than some thing. The three exceptions rely upon a single headline or, for obvious reasons, a completely black cover. In those three cases, what they rely upon is a big story and most of the other 37 covers do the same - whether it's Watergate, Apollo XI, Vietnam, celebrities being pregnant or coming out, 911, etc.

Just thought that might provide some useful last-minute inspiration.

Hmm..thought provoking...Like you say I found that nearly 80% of them figured in that list because of the 'eye stopping' nature of the news(or image)they had in the cover. Nothing extraordinary in the design i feel except for a very few. The title should be America's 40 most famous magazine covers.

My favourite one is the jun 85 nat geo mag, though.

Yeah, the old adage is true...it's the news that sells. Yes, the designs are fairly staid but then that's what makes these particular magazines so instantly recognisable.

The image that most attracted me was Warhol climbing out of the soup, which is probably easy to produce in this day and age, but not so easy back in '69 when it would've had to have been created in the darkroom. The most unique image has to be the shot of Aldrin - no chance to do a repeat shoot if that had gone belly-up.

I was surprised at the lack of reportage images on the covers though - the Viet Cong summary execution picture, the girl after the napalm bomb, Berlin 1989, Cambodia and Pol Pot, etc.
