Changing variables with an address?

Is there anyways to change the varible within a swf with the address bar?
For example:
http://www.kirupa.com/page1.php?myVariable=2
would set the variable myVariable within the flash file located on the page1.php page to equal "2".
I thought I'd seen this done somewhere.
