I was sent a bunch of *.php files, that i was supposed to modify to fit the needs of a current project. The person who sent the files mentioned something about Zend... what is it... why am i not able to view the code in my editor, or in notepad ?

Zend offers a compiler type thing that can run on php but is not editable so it protects your code, and still works with the php server since Zend is the main supporter of it...You'll need to ask him for the un-encrypted files...
I believe someone cracked it before but i cannot recall if that was a hoax or not
