Hey, I just wanted to get a poll whether or not people think I should keep the snowflake transitions or do away with them. http://xc-skiing.bencline.net
Thanks,

It look so big... Try making it smaller in that way your speed of transition will also get smoother...
IMO you should keep that transition but with some updates on it

yes i agree with them, for some reason your transition seems to be slow but there isnt a lot going on, what framerate are u using?
i like your site by the way

i am using 30 FPS....the problem is the snowflake transition is an onEnterFrame event that controls a dynamically created blur and glow trail, so this slows the site considerably. I managed to speed it up a bit and you can view it at http://www.bencline.net/skiing thanks for the comments....

500 times quicker on the snow flake, still not keen on it, buts its more tolerable now
but now the text loading bit is way slow.....this guy uses blurs (http://www.oringe.com/flashSite/) well and there is a source code too, however his hangs a bit too....

I managed to speed up the sections of the site by bumping down the quality of the blur filter, however, it still lags quite a bit. I may end up getting rid of it all together. I also sped up the links as well, maybe they could be sped up even more....not sure yet. Thanks for the link on that guys website, his work is amazing, I'll have to work up to that, lol. http://xc-skiing.bencline.net
once again thanks for the comments

Why not? I think they could be made to look more snowflakey, and perhaps make each one slightly different, like in real life, but with a bit of work, could be a strong and original element in your site (which is really cool anyways :-)

yeah....once i get a little more time, i plan on spending more than 5 seconds on the snowflake...lol. I'll probably draw up a few different ones in Illustrator. Thanks for the comments and suggestions.

how about dynamically making the snowflakes...:)

I thought about dynamically creating the snowflakes.....right now the trails that snowflake makes are completely dynamic and random, however the snowflake is just an attached movie clip. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah....sorry it is in Flash 8, mostly just because of the blurs and glows. It could have been just as easily been made in Flash MX, however, since its not really for a client, I just wanted to have some fun working with Flash 8.

Alright, so I created a little nicer snowflake than before, and I plan on creating several different ones but I think this one looks much better than the previous snowflake.....

so do you think that i should get rid of the snowflakes altogether? I want to keep the site more minimalistic in style, because the content is supposed to the most important thing - text/blogs/pictures/videos/etc.

hmmm, i like the snow flake idea. but it think it could be done better. maybe if you have a few smaller flakes that move randomly or something. but the one big one just looks a little clunky.
the word SCROLL could be a little more stylized. i know it's supposed to be a simple instruction but it's just bland.
i love your background tile.
