"pushing Intel's share of the market to just 18.5 per cent"
Doesnt seem right at all.

read the article the original links to: http://news.com.com/Strike%20three%20for%20Intel/2100-1014_3-6045843.html?tag=nefd.top
it is more clear about the percentages:
AMD's surge can be seen most strongly in the U.S. retail market, which accounts for about 9 percent of global PC shipments. In the first seven weeks of 2006, AMD's share in desktops in that area climbed to 81.5 percent, while Intel's has slid to 18.5 percent...
In notebooks, Intel's share has declined to 63 percent, even though Baker and others generally agree that Intel enjoys a technological advantage in laptops...
Other analysts, however, said that not all of Intel's woes can be laid at AMD's feet. For instance, PC sales typically slow by between 5 percent and 10 percent from the fourth quarter to the first. And for the past six years, Intel has seen revenue decline in that period by 7.2 percent, according to its financial statements...

That's just looking at sales though, right? Total market share is way in Intel's favor. People don't buy new PCs every month.

Yeah, in total market share, Intel is still up by quite a lot :cowbell:

Yeh. I mean AMD was ot that popular 5 years aback and there are millions of consumers using those machines today so I'd say that intel still had majority of the market but obviously if those facts are true and AMD keeps on climbing in its market share then in another 5 years maybe AMD will be on top.

This is just a small burp in the economy. Here's my reasoing:
While you might say the shares plummeted, and intel has worse chips than AMD, there is two important things to consider. The foremost being that as mentioned Intel has the market advantage. The next being that stock prices go up and down, right now google's stock is going down.
Besides that, you also have to consider the volume of shares as well. Now some people speculate that AMD could overcome Intel, like mac will over microsoft :snug:, but that is all up in the air. This is the result of that fact that the way our current chips are designed; we have pushed the envelope to the near maximum in making these chips better. Way back long ago intel had the newest chip design, hence they have been market leaders for some time. Now we are basically at a physical barrier, and we need to move forward to a new design of chip, which would be three demensional or quantum chips, which I have been preaching for what seems like forever.
At the current state of our microprocessors, we can only push it a little at a time, kind of like a tit for tat speed increase. The moral of this rant? Simple. This stcok change reflects near nothing in any change of buisness. Innovation will determine who will come out on top.
