im planing to buy a DVD writer but im still undecided about which brand should i get. my first choice was the SONY DRU-810A it's kinda expensive but im sure it'll last and i can use it for a long time. But later this morning i saw the Lite-On DVD writer which is cheaper. Some of my frends are telling me that Lite-on is a good brand. im askin' for your opinion guys to help me decide. because i don't want to get a writer that will not last. just like what happend to my CD writer. have you encountered that problem when your drive won't eject? yeah that happened to my cd-writer it's an LG by the way. coz it's frustrating when you want to use it and it won't eject. So i don't want to repeat that problem again. so what do you think about the LITE-ON brand? or what advice can you give me?

Well it really doesnt matter since Sony burners are actually Lite-Ons with a Sony label on them.
I suggest you get a pioneer or a plextor never had any problems with these.
Happy shopping

my first choice was the SONY DRU-810A
I bought two of these when best buy had a huge rebate deal on them, one for work, one for home and dont really care for them. .
Occasionally they detect as cd players, occasionally as dvd writers. If your burning software decides its a cd player at the time you need to burn something your basically screwed.
Also I had to remove my other dvd players(non-writable) because the sony simply wouldnt work with them installed.
As for Lite-On I havent had to buy one in over 4 years because my original Lite-On cd burner still works great. Assuming they still make em like they used to I'd probably go with the Lite-On.

wow really?! SONY's were Lite-Ons...hhmmm how did that happen? SONY is buying their drives from lite-on then selling it to people?
anyway, SONY was my first choice becuase i have a SONY CD-ROM drive and i've been using fo like 5 yrs and it still works fine until now. that gave me the idea that i could have the same quality when i buy a SONY DVD writer......
But according to your replies maybe i'll get a LITE-ON...well im not really planning to write softwares. I just want to write my files here in DVD format u know for backup purposes. Also i want to burn my videos here in my hard drive so that i can delete them for good hehe. coz im kinda running out of space now i only have an 80 GB hard drive. my videos and movies are eating a lot of space that's why i want to put them in a DVD.

I've had a Sony DRU-720A for about 9 months now.
The first few times I tried to burn a DVD, the DVD would be kind of "jumpy." The disc would have like 10-15 "hiccups" on it during playback. I upgraded my firmware and set the burn speed down from 16x to 8x (yes I was using 16x discs before). It burns flawlessly now!
I'm not sure if I just needed new firmware or if my computer isn't quite fast enough to burn at 16x (2.0 ghz P4, 512 mb of RAM, 7200 RPM Seagate PATA hard drive). I'm not very concerned whether I burn at 8x or 16x...it doesn't save that much time. Plus, the past few times I've bought blank DVD's, I've just gone ahead and got 8x discs because they're cheaper.
Bottom Line: I'm very happy with my Sony drive. It cost a little more, but I like the Sony brand in general (okay, so the whole DRM thing on their CDs sucks but I like their electronics). If I had to do it over again, I would buy a Sony drive again.

:thumb: I have a Pioneer DVR-A06 in my Mac and, touch wood, never had a problem. No coasters as yet, and it burns pretty fast.

lol yeah Sonys are Lite-Ons... I found a DVD burner I wanted by Sony, did some research and found the Lite-On version of it for cheaper. (Same exact thing except without SONY on the front.)

I have a SONY CD-RW in my old PC.. it's been working steady for about 5 years or so, but it's made many coasters.
However, I've had a Pioneer DVD-RW for about 2 years now and it's never made a coaster, burns quickly, and most importantly, it's extremely quiet. So, I'd recommend the Pioneer if you can find it for a similar price.
Sorry I dont have model #s... i know thw SONY is a 24X CD-RW.. and the Pioneer is a 16X DVD-RW.

I've never really liked Sony for their other electronic products. You should look at Pioneer or LG. LG is very realiable with all the major standards.

I've never had any problems with and CD roms/DVD roms so always went pretty blindly in to buying them. I currently have a sony DW-Q30A (http://www.savastore.com/productinfo/product.aspx?catalog_name=Savastore&product_id=10284726&pid=207&rstrat=3081) its dirt cheap and I've never had a problem in the year or so I've had it.

To be honest, you probably won't notice the difference. If you're really worried, go for the one with greater warranty. Otherwise, go for the cheaper with faster write and read speeds.

alright i think im gonna buy the Lite-On 16x SOHW-1653S. this one is cheaper than the SONY DRU-810A. Is this one good? coz it has another version the Lite-On 16x SOHW-1693S dual panel which is more expensive almost the same price as the SONY. i looked at their specs and their almost the same. well you see im not gonna always write DVD's. i just want to have a drive that is capable of writng both DVDs and CDs in short all in one..hehehe
