... I don't get it... How can they just port closed software to a closed platform?Yes, but more importantly, why?

I think what we should really be celebrating here is the creation of the world's ugliest GUI:

It's pretty good for the first version. It has some trouble with intense vector objects, but it will get better.

The only major problem is that it can't run with the ELoader, it needs firmware 1.50. From what I've heard from Fanjita though the next version should work on higher firmwares.

All in all it's very good news.

Kind of cool that the guy won the $2000 prize too =)

Yeah, so if your willing to risk screwing up your PSP (i'm not) for the right to run a "crappy" version of the Flash player then your all set.

it's really pointless unless you want to put web layouts on your psp

The flash player was a result of a contest on psphacks.net offering $2000 to the person who could create the best swf player for the psp before the end of February

Except this is a homebrew application... Plus, flash apps will never be as powerful as the raw C code that you can use now. They will never be able to do anything directly on the hardware (which rules out all of the sweet stuff that has gone on in the PSP Homebrew scene... Telnet, Universal IR Remote, Emulators, WiFi Sniffers, etc)

It won't screw up your PSP, I can guarantee that. It doesn't touch the flash, hence no chance of a brick..

Ever heard of flash movies or flash games?

theres speculation out there that a proper flash player will be release with the firware 3.0 update. if that does happen then maybe we will be able to interact fully with the hardware.

I can guarantee with 100% certainty that Sony would not willingly allow us to interact with the hardware directly. They have made locking out homebrew a higher priority than developing more features for the firmware.

i dont understand, why wont sony want you to buy homebrew games? Its not like those crappy games are gonna stop you buying retail games lol

Well, first off, you don't generally have to buy homebrew; it's free. And second, sony thinks that homebrew == piracy. Which it doesn't.

I actually prefer the "crappy [homebrew] games" to the mindless drivel that SCEA comes out with. Honestly they are more creative and innovative than Sony is.

^sorry mistype, i knew they were free.

and i do like the homebrew games, in terms of there fun. But compared to the quality of a retail game they are "crap"

9 out of every 10 people who boot their PSP up to run "homebrew" stuff ARE bootlegging the games too.

You can deny it if you want, but it would be sorta sad.

I guess I shouldn't have used numbers at all.

Let me retry that.

In my personal opinion this "homebrew" crap is nothing but a front for a bunch of theives. Go to any torrent site or onto LimeWire and you can easily find rips of PSP games.

...and who is responsible for these? Who makes these possible?

Homebrew thieves.

I was trying to sugarcoat it, but whatever.

1) copyright infringement != theft
2) In my personal opinion this "hardware store" crap is nothing but a front for a bunch of thieves. Go to any council estate near you and you can easily find people breaking into houses using crowbars.

Hardware stores.

It's people like you that are the reason why Sony thinks it's alright to bend consumers over and quietly screw them :-/

It looks like there will be official support soon enough:
http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/15/psp-gets-gps-and-camera-add-ons-video-chat-and-voip-and-media/

...a future firmware release will bring Macromedia Flash compatibility and a new RSS Channel function to save and playback internet radio and video content.

i would say it's the people who are willing to pay $300 for the PSP that allows sony to charge that price. products and services are only worth what someone's willing to pay.

That's great that Sony is trying to catch up ;)

Someone already got his GPS working on his PSP. And there're already a PS1 emu and an N64 emu in the works. Nice of Sony to actually do something cool for once. I wonder though, without homebrew to guide them, would they have announced this cool stuff anyway? =)

Well, Sony thinks Homebrew == Security Risk, which it was been proven to be. :)

especially since you most likely bought the psp to play cool 3d games like it was designed to do.
