View Full Version : Webdesign battle - css

A few webdesign battles were planned lately and none of them came to an end so I though I'd try to start one up.
Here's what I had in mind:
Theme: coffee company (but open to any suggestions)
Html will be provided for the page, with all the elements you might need for a page (+ a .css refference)
The design will be your choice.
Rule: you are not allowed to change the html at all. You will have to implement the design through .css.

Html file attached

Anyone interested?

i like it...but please may we edit the HTML, at least just abit...otherwise it is just about colour...and you can do more then just colour with css.

http://www.csszengarden.com/

It can be much more than just color if it's setup in this way.

i am in. been wanting to do something like this for a while.. but i would suggest not using dropdown menu's it just adds a layer of complexity that isn't needed.

I'm in, this sounds pretty cool. I dunno how good my entry is gonna be though, I just got into this CSS thing.

I'm game.

About the html:
Any "non-functional" div's (empty div's for design purposes) like
CSSZenGarden does, or will everything be set right from the start?

Either way, I think this is a great initiative! Good on ya!

i'm in but why do we want to complicate things with javascript and ajax????

Nav should be simple text and its up to the designer to incorporate it into their design

Yeah I'm pretty good at CSS, but I hate javascript and ajax. I thought those were only for web applications and forms and stuff?

mpelland

just make the nav an unordered list and people can do as they please

OK so I understand there's no need for javascript?
There will be all the structural html elements present. No img inserted via html. And no, you can't edit at all the html. Sorry, no empty divs, but there will be plenty of nested divs..so you will have to deal with that:)
So basically you will have all the html support you might need. What part of it you use and in what way - that's your choice.

it seems like a daunting task not being able to edit the html but thats why css is so beautiful. I'm currently working on my own css zen garden design, and i must say, its fun manipulating the css in this fashion :D

I'm sorry for the delay.I'm rellocating and stuff..things getting pretty busy around here.
Anyway, I'm thinking of a 3 weeks timeframe (I think it's reasonable).
Here is the html file:

I think there should be a tad more smileys to indicate whether somebody is being sarcastic, rather than the very blatant sarcasm tags, which nobody uses because it defeats the whole point of sarcasm…

after looking at the html, i have a few suggestions:
1) use realistic content so this can also serve as a portfolio piece
2) include a search input and button (preferably in the bottom 1/3 of the html)
3) explain the form
4) fix the html typo in line 69 (value="Send"/> to value="Send" />)
5) shorten titles and text.

Right now I'm about to leave on my way to the airport and then to NY, so the changes in html will have to wait a few days till I can get a net conn there.
P.S Wish me luck

ditto are you settled in your new home? I would like to take part in this new contest. It is very difficult for me not having had a great experience in css. I came up with the concept of advertising coffee in the style of an advert in a nineteen fifties comic rather than doing it in a traditional fashion such as getting pics of coffee beans, coffee jars etc and using them in the design. - is this ok? I did a screen shot of what I have come up with so far - but the css is real difficult for me to be honest - only being a begginer. Would this sort of design be ok for your competition?

Wow, someone has posted for this!
My sincere appollogies salvador marley, I thought that this thread never got any answers afterwards.

Clean css, you really don't seem like being a beginner to it:) And I like the design/concept too. :thumb2:

So..is anyone else interested in participating?

Sorry Defective, no flash embedding, no tables, no google ads for the cool kids, the html doesn't change.

off topic:

Hey thanks Ditto and the canadian.

Well, i'm just working my way through css books and online tutorials and would one day like to do one of those Zen Garden designs.

I'm amazed that this thread did not take off - with this being a web design community. Perhaps because it's css and not flash based?

:)

Hope to see some designs in the near future.
