hey guys,

i just saw this cool figurine made by this art studio based on a character they designed, and i can't work out what it's made from...i'd love to try it myself just to see how hard it is to do.

its some kind of hard material, but obviously must be carveable too... any experienced people?

Use modeling clay, seems the easiest way to go. There is a process to "firing" the clay after it's done to make it hard.

I have tried sculpting and I can tell you it was about 1,000,000,000,000 times harder than it looked.

"firing" a.k.a kiln. Modeling clay though is usually produced for home users so that they can use the oven. Modeling clay isn't that expensive either, and I'm pretty sure there's diff types of clay which you can let sit out without it hardening(artists pet peeve), and some that will dry when you set it out. If you can't find any clay that doesnt dry set you can just leave your clay project overnight with several sheets of wet paper towels covering it. Yes, you can tell I've worked with clay before, and take it from me it's a nasty monster lol. It's messy, hard to get some shapes you want, you need lots of tools, you have to make slip(clay+water mix used to fill cracks and smoothen clay), and it breaks when you drop it :( . That's why i stuck with drawing and painting :P

mmm i'm pretty sure that isn't modelling clay. There are some work in progress shots, and it just looks like the material is too firm, dense, hard, whatever to be modelling clay. those detached bits like the hair... i don't think you could really do them with modelling clay.

this is even cooler

because you get to see the whole 360 degrees.

so any more ideas on what's used to make it?
perhaps this image shows more detail of the material
