take a look this was done for an online banner ad for the west wing dvd set. where it appears half the size and at 20% opacity.
the entire flag and the up and down movement is create dynamically.
the movement on the edge is done with a tweened mask.
if you look at the code it is not optimized yet (cause i am a sloppy coder and i always go back and clean things up at a later date).

Thats...pretty bad, sorry. It doesn't look anything like a flag waving in the wind. Theres a lot of jagged edges. The tween makes the fabric move in ways that would normally rip the fabric in real life.
Plus, the American flag has 50 stars, not 36 and it also has 13 stripes, not 9.
But it was pretty interesting how much work you put into that! Great effort man, all that code must've taken a while to complete. But you know you need to condense it all...it could be done much smooth with loops and OOP. Your one method was pretty weak, and probably didn't end up shaving off much lag. Where all of the squares supposed to move? I only saw the first like, 1/3 of the image on the left move.
