:P I was wondering if you meant to say SOTW also. I figured it meant submission of the week, but the week part didn't really fit.

soo many wasted votes :diss:
dbarbarian
02-07-2006, 10:36 PM
I don't know if I would call them wasted. The people who selected that are most likely going to be people with entries that are being voted on (because if they actually voted it would obviously be biased) or people who don't really care about the actual entries and just want to see the results. The No Vote is especially beneficial to the later situation, because it discourages people from randomly voting just to see the results without actually going through the entries.
In conclusion, I don't see those votes as being wasted, but rather channeled to where they won't be biased or random, allowing a fairer (more fair?) voting process.
That's just my opinion though.

That's just my opinion though. Semi-Seconded :P The other half of the seconded opinion goes to jeremy's opinion. That is a really odd saying I am neutral :P
It is really good that we don't have random votes, but still it would be good if everyone could glance over the entries enough to vote for the best. Or they could do the alternative of logging out to see the results :P
Woot! 500 Posts finally, not that it really matters.

They're all great. Interactive Tree stood out to me thought. And then on a second look I realize it was one of your entries, freeskier. Figured we might as well stick togther at this point.

i think the results should not be shown before the voting is over.
psychologically, people tend to vote the highest ranker which i feel is unfair :(
i too was tempted to vote the one which got highest vote :|

i luv them all! so hard to pick just one. after much chin scratching, tooth-nashing and runningly around wildly between all of McGiver's entries, icio's stars, freeskier89's circle fitting, and well really all of them and even lots of entries that didn't make it to the poll... i had to give my vote to jerez_z's spiral fractal entry :) this kind of actionscript contest should happen again and again. it's so nice to look at interesting code in delicious bite sized pieces.
-now if someone will just code a gallery to display these in 25 lines :)

I didn't vote for any because they're all good... It's pretty impossible to pick between different effects... It's not like any are better or worse, they're all just different from each other.
I still don't understand why it's ok to use
var bmp:flash.display.BitmapData = new flash.display.BitmapData(...);
but not
import flash.display.BitmapData;
var bmp:BitmapData = new BitmapData(...);
Hell, if either, it should be the second one that is allowed because it's taking up more lines whilst giving a massive advantage over < Flash 8 users, where-as the first has no disadvantage, puting them at an even greater advantage to < Flash 8 users.
Also, by using `flash.display.BitmapData`, flash will automatically import the class, so it's exactly the same thing anyway, excluding the disadvantage in using the import statement.
wtf at that rule.
I really liked the shark entry, McGiver (the Mullet is really cool too :lol: ) I also really like your other entry too, McGiver, flowerchain. :thumb:

FLOWERCHAIN! MY FAV!! :pac:
Well, the winner is...
(None - just show me the results!)
for getting the most votes. :lol:
I personally think that there shouldnt be the (None - just show me the results!) vote. As for the competitors, they can vote for themselves. No harm. Everyone thinks he had done a good job. At least the current "winner" here will have his vote given to someone else's submission. That's why its called a poll..lol
no vote thing is useful to people who just want to look at the current winning entry, and i think it's more like a tradition now. :)
btw, i still need an answer to this: http://www.kirupa.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1771575&postcount=44
and i need anwser for this :
http://www.kirupa.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1771669&postcount=47
yeah, i logged out and found that out. but i think you were the only person too tempted to do that. :P but yes, you're right, the results shouldn't be displayed OR the admin/mod/poll creater should be given a choice whether a guest could see the results or not...

kdd - I don't know how to do that, but when I figure it out, I'll try to implement it that way.
icio - it would be more unfair to allow only Flash 8 users to use an import statement while disallowing users of other versions from using them. If it so happens that your version of Flash has access to more default features than another version of Flash, then you should be able to take advantage of those features.
Regarding guests seeing the poll results without even voting, there is no setting to avoid that. If guests were allowed to vote, they can vote multiple times by simply clearing their cookies and refreshing the page. Jaya, the solution to this would answer your question also.

It's only logical that people with a newer version would have a bit of an advantage. People who are using newer computers have an advantage too, because they can test their stuff faster. To disallow the features of Flash 8 is basically to ignore all of the goodness that it provides. When I bought studio 8, I didn't buy it so I could do all the same old stuff from mx 2004.
kdd - I don't know how to do that, but when I figure it out, I'll try to implement it that way.
thanks. :) it's just that it is easier to see.

That's exactly what I'm saying. You have allowed people to use the first sample of code that I gave. You said people weren't allowed to import BitmapData classes, etc.
And by "Accessing" these features, flash automatically imports so you have the same advantage that was trying to be avoided when you banned `import` statements. My point is that you can still use the class, and in less lines. Surely you should be against this too ?

icio - the only surefire way of disallowing 3rd party class files would be to forbid the use of import statements. Also, why spend two lines to do something that you could accomplish in one line ;)
