My computer has a 60 gb hard drive, and it's always said it was 60 in my computer. But now when i look at it in my computer, it says its only 37 gb. I WANT MY OTHER 23 BACK. I've tried disk cleanup and deleting temp internet files, but that didn't help.

xp pro rocks you. get all the updates...get some anti-spyware...a good virus...turn off error reporting and you're fine

Well dang it. I just typed about a page of stuff and lost it. Well, here we go again. Thanks for the replies, and sorry I didn't reply before this.

I don't know if I partitioned my drive, or if I have enabled large disk support. I don't know what these things are, so I bet they're at defaults or weren't done.

My sytem restore is set at MAX, 12% (4578 MB)

No files in recycle bin

I don't know if I have virtual memory. I have 512 mb of real (i guess thats what i should call it) ram. Here is what I see in Task Manager when I click Performance (some of the numbers are constantly changing so I'll just put what they're at to see if you guys see anything strange)

Physical memory (K)
Total 523616
Available 350960
System Cache 347288

Kernel Memory (K)
Total 26820
Paged 19008
NonPaged 7584

Commit Charge (K)
Total 131852
Limit 1280560
Peak 354544

PF Usage
128 mb

Commit Charge 128M / 1250M

Thanks again guys

you may need to parition your hard drive using a program such as Partition magic, it can regain your missing space....it has a feature where you can redistribute unused space

note: the demo does not actually rearrange your HDD....its simply there to show you WHAT the program does, if you can get full version, then its really useful

Dont you mean defrag your hardrive? Makaveli. Defraging your hardrive basically organises the files in your sectors of your hardrive, You see as you get using your computer and start installing, unistalling programs and moving and deleting folder, your files are all over the sectors on your harddrive, what defrag does is locates all the file and basically rearranges them, Not physically, basically you see no difference , but you can get back alot of Meg back from doing this and your apps will run much faster.

:::its sorta like having a fresh install of windows, we all love that feeling :beam:

Yeah id say that a defrag wud be the way to go, igf u havnt already, and u dont need partition magic (well not really) coz u can partition ur drive and rearange and such like usin windows.:toad:

Ram allocated for windows when it runs out of physical ram (your ram hardware eg... 128meg, 512meg) Its actually your harddrive working as ram if your physical ram gets filled up.

you know what might actually be the problem here your temp folder not windows temp folder the users temp folder winxp has temporary folders where it stores some of the latest data youve used sometimes if you use a cd burning program and choose to make a temporary image file and then burn it to the cd and you do not choose delete image after burn the image file will remain on your pc untill you erase it, in order to view your temp folder you have to go to tools tab and select folder options, once your here go to the view tab and make sure you got a checkmark on the following option: show hidden files or folders.

Once youve done this go to your c: drive, documents and settings,go into the folder with your user name, then go to local settings in here you will find your temporary internet folder and you temp folder empty them both out and dont worry your system wont crash because all the data there is garbage

I tried the local settings thing grim, but didn't work. I don't burn many cd's. How do I tell if I'm using virtual ram?

go to my computer, right click on it choose properties, go to the advanced tab, in the performance tab hit settings, then advanced, you will see it says virtual memory at the bottom and it says the number in bytes of how much virtual ram youre using 1000= 1 gigabyte i have 2000 allocated for virtual ram and 512 or ram i like to work fast, here you can change the amount you want to have for virtual memory

Ive partitioned my second drive and using 500 min to 1000 max just for vitual memory. :beam: currently running 512 ddr (333) physical ram as well.

::planning to get around 1gig and a half more ram in the future

Thanks Grim. I did have it at 768 (2 over the recommended), but if this makes my comp faster, i'll set it at 2000. What they hey, i'll sacrifice some storage space to make it faster.

Thanks so much everybody.
