Not really a website persay, and I don't normally put sites up that aren't really a whole site... but I thought it was really cool promo piece. Props on the composition and the parody, pretty unique IMO. For those of you that don't know the song it's Kanye West - Heard Em Say, and you may not get it if you don't know some design lingo... or haven't heard the original song.

Dave, I'm sure Kanye wouldn't mind it! I saw pentagram's office in midtown and didn't know it was a design firm. I always wondered why they used the name pentagram.. kinda weird for a company name. Anyhow, great work!!

SimplyArun

The pentagram has got a long history behind it - it's also called the Star of David. It symbolises the 5 senses. It can relate to using the 5 senses to the max, getting the creative juices out, ...
So there you have it - a design firm named Pentagram

Rezzing this thread because he finished his portfolio which was awarded an FWA and I think it deserves more attention and as many views as possible ;)

I have seen this refered to as a "Fake portfolio" on the Jess3 linkblog and someplace else. Is this "fake"? Meaning is this really a multi-person project or some othe rtype of misleading thing?

I don't understand why almost every time I see this site it's called a "fake-portfolio".

I've never seen it b4... i saw it on that jesse thing... only after i googled it. but i highly doubt it's refering to the validity of the actual portfolio, maybe it was something that dave put into his blog or somethin. the portfolio looks pretty "real" to me... and reaguardless of if someone helped him or not... he's still able to show that he can provide the services needed to execute the projects that may come his way, and that's what it's all about.

wow. Very nice! Is there still a link to the promo i never got to see?

The only thing is that the site seems a little unclear as to the purpose. It's a portfolio site for what? Just to show off the work you did at portfolio center? Still sweet though and the work is awesome.

why did u name the coffee machine aphelion? How is the cost of materials/finished work managed? Does the school pay for all that (like metal work for impact) ?

Also it would be cool to be able to see even more, especially for the process pages. Like on brinker being able to click on the kit of parts and actually read it.

okaysamurai
February 22nd, 2006, 02:30 AM
Thanks for the great feedback everyone.

Aphelion is an astronomy term for a certain postion between the earth and the sun. I just thought it sounded cool. Cost of materials, such as the chair, is all up to the student. I will begin paying back grad school loans pretty soon...but it was a worthwhile investment.

And by "fake", I think that person meant it was all schoolwork. As in, I didn't really redesign Wachovia's website or make a Brinker international report for a paycheck. But yeah, this is a one-person portfolio...this is the end product of two years' worth of work at the graduate school Portfolio Center in Atlanta GA, and was made with the intention of finding a fulltime job in the creative industry. The response has been really great and I'm excited to see what happens next!

Just wanted to also thank Kirupa for the countless tutorials I've gone through over the years...it has been an instrumental part in
learning Flash. Thanks everyone.

Can I ask what the Portfolio Center is? I just moved to Savannah for grad studies in Interactive Design, and whatever you're involved in, it sounds like it's worth looking into.

Great site Dave, alot of interesting concepts, well developed and thought out all the way through. The use of video works well and even though i havent had a chance to look at all the videos they all seem profressional and creative. I partically like the rollover event where you can see the thoughts and sketches on the logos and other various designs, nice work well done :thumb:

I just saw this website now and I must say it was great. I liked it for the interactivity especially exploring and explaining the work that he has done. Even the small things like the Kennedy Center redesign where he showed the paper scribbles of what font is used, etc. Many people think that successfuly designers use some sort of high level branding system but it's just pencil and paper.

One of the most interesting sites posted for a while IMO.

For me the most interesting aspect is his drawing ability. Going through the site it was clear that learning the skills to build say a website/logotype was very much secondary to genuine creative processes like drawing. That is what will really impress a prospective employer IMO.

He clearly has the ability to apply himself to different medium and so given time to gain different skill sets can probably do whatever he wants, although I would stop short of product design at the moment!

It will be interesting to see what he delivers when tackling a real life commercial brief. But congratulations Dave!

Wow that was truly a blast I havent just sat and clicked through a site in a long time. One thing i think Dave does that is so great is he makes everything about his site compelling. Even the portfolio reels are put together so well I want to watch the next one just to see what kind of music and effects he threw together. Excellent job A+.

Thats probably one of the most ignorant quotes I have heard in a while. Do you get sick of the CG quality of pixar movies cause they are used again and again. You say it like producing that kind of effect is easy in AE. Just like any program only people that are truly skilled with it can achieve that kind of quality.

Daves website has a lot of music that im sure is not licensed is that okay to do since these are just fictional projects or would you have to get a licence if your were using that music no matter what??

It's a good site and he has a lot of talent, but most of the After Effects he is using are in fact presets using the trapcode particular plugin.

So your comparison of movies is quite different than a 2 second effect.

Granted he has to use the plugin in a neat way, which he did for the most part. There are some things I would change, but if the site got him a job, then enough has been said.

The planning/marketing/concept was amazing. There wasn't anything about the design or the use of Flash that "wowed" me. Doesn't look like much actionscript was involved as well.

Also dave said he worked on this for 2 years. 2 years is a long time which you would need to create something like this, no doubt.

I also agree with PR about the aftereffects.

Now with that said I am not taking anything away from Dave, I'm sure he worked super hard on this. But the fact is there are tons of portfolio's that are much more technically envolved with jobless creators, Dave just has a much better marketing scheme :)

Good job Dave!

So there you have it - a design firm named Pentagram

actually the star of david (http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Judaism/star.html) has 6 sides and has nothing to do with a pentagram (http://altreligion.about.com/library/weekly/aa100102a.htm)

i didn't see the promo in the beginning of this thread but i did see the website and it's absolutely terrific.

where does it say that a great website needs to use actionscript?

@dave's use of plugins - anyone that makes comments about his use of plugins had BETTER NEVER EVER use plugins themselves.

That's a ridiculous statement. There's good (appropriate, innovative) use of plugins, and perhaps not so good use of plugins.

I'd tend to agree - the great thing about the site is not so much the design, and not so much the technical skills (things of which are fine to scrutinise, it's kinda the whole idea of the kool sites section...) - but the innovation of how he is presenting and reasoning his concepts. He's a great thinker and creative, but like the others, I don't think the site is an outstanding display of design or visual stimulation, by any means, and I think more agree but won't join in. But it is bombastic as far as sites go, and pretty eye catching, either way ;).

The site is, more than anything, just the product of a hell of a lot of hard work.

Good on him for securing a place at frog.

Nowhere I'm just pointing out that the Flash didn't amaze me, did it amaze you? If so maybe you should get around the net more.

And no I haven't used those plug ins before.
