Ok how do you select an existing gradient fill in PS ?

ie. If you have a layer with a gradient fill on it how do you select the gradient and open up its Gradient Editor so that you can adjust it.

I know there is a tool in Flash for selecting gradients but how in PS ?

Thanks for any help !

I would doubt very much that there is, as once u paint a gradient onto a layer, then it goes down as different coloured pixels (raster) not as a mathematical gradient (vector) as in flash. It it was just a simple 2 colour gradient i guess u could use the eyedropper tool and remake it, but if it was more comples, would be a bit difficult.

On the other hand i may be wrong, and ive just never found this mysterious reverse gradient tool.. :}

Well, there is more than one way to add a gradient to a object :)

If you did it with the gradient tool in the tool pallet, there is no way to edit it once you've draged em out. And when you're not happy with it, you should just drag annother on top of it. And the old one will be repleaced.

You can also add a gradient to a layer! When doing it this way, make sure your object is in that layer, and nothing else. Then double click the layer to bring up the Layer Style menu. Then go to Gradient Overlay and there you have your "Gradient Editor" ;) This will work like the one in flash. You can set it to radial, liniear, and other kinds of gradient. You can also tweak with the blendmodes, the opacity and the angle.

edit: Keep in mind that the gradient added as a Layer Style doesnt affect the object(s) in the layer. Well it does, but not completely. So later you can always change or delete the style. ( its kind of a layer above the layer itself :D )

I knew both ways of doing it, but had been using the tool pallet as I was filling in a marquee shape on a blank layer as I didn't want it applied to the whole layer below.

Should have been using the filter menu all along but thought it would apply to the whole document and not the shape on the layer I wanted...

Doh... now dont I feel stupid...

Thanks guys.... :thumb:
