I know it's been done before... but meh... let's do it again, because Wacom tablets (say it with me) PWN!

I dont know about these being my 'best' sketches, but they certainly are my first 2. These arent even original, i grabbed the basic sketches off of google and traced them, just getting used to it.

eesh. okay, so far this is my best. i've never actually used a tablet before. it taking some getting used to, since i'm used to looking at the surface i'm drawing on, not a computer screen.

i'm using that Alias Sketchbook, too, that i tried for the first time about 20 minutes ago.:worried:

I'm pretty crap at drawing...
This isn't my best, but it's the first cartoon I drew on my new tablet, there is a teacher at my school who this resembles, and I have a cartoon frame in the weekly school magazine...

First digital drawing in ages, so give me a break.

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/7650/draw4fb.jpg

Picture is of Trey, the badboy of an animation series im trying to get off the ground. Original character by Bird-E.

Done in about 3-5 mins in photoshop. Doesnt look right to me, but I guess you cant compare digital drawings with actual sketches. For those of you who are wondering, that's a tattoo on his right arm and his hand is in his pocket. No, he is not posing, he's scratching his head. That's a kind of in-built uzi/mac holster at the back of his pants and his crew's trademark arm band on his left arm.

Bird-E
January 7th, 2006, 10:52 PM
http://img497.imageshack.us/img497/8503/sketch8eu.jpg

i was goofing around (procrastinating! ahhh i'll never make this year's resolution). Just a quick sketch. Made in flash, because it feels more 'native' to draw my characters. Its kinda scrappy looking, but in animation, no one notices.

Trey doesnt normally smile, but I had to make him suit for this picture.

Pasquale
January 7th, 2006, 11:26 PM
i rekon flash sucks for drawing characters cause of the smoothing- draw the roughs in sketchbook :P- then clean up in flash :)

*edit- here is my roughs for my random jumping panda
im cleaning him/her up now

Bird-E
January 7th, 2006, 11:34 PM
the point of the brush's smoothing is to alias your work. It helps me a lot because sometimes my hand shakes (notice the left arm on my first sketch), and I dont want such small movements to affect my work. There are ups and downs of both methods though. Like i said, when animated it makes no difference, except for the pan/still shots which i pay extra attention to.

Pasquale
January 7th, 2006, 11:41 PM
hence why you rough out ur frames first in a more precise app then line test the final shot for the sequence in something such as flash ;)
That's how they make the Gorillaz video clips (well the old ones) they were lintested in flash and rendered in flash :) (my friend worked on it)

btw in flash that line consistency is VERY noticible as you can see quiver even in the slightest movements

Bird-E
January 7th, 2006, 11:54 PM
heh we could go on about this for ages, but im gonna cut it short. so sue me, im lazy. Im a designer, not an animator :), i want to get it all in one shot, because animating tends to annoy me. Just a hobby man, im a soon-to-be newgrounds artist.

i was trying to do different styles, so i experimented today with a photo of some eyes as a reference, and came up with this. i like it, because it looks a bit less digital than other stuff i've done before...then i got bored of it, so thats why some bits (like the shape of the shadows) looks weird.

nah, i'm trying to be more 'artistic' because i realised that a straight design background can really constrict your creativity.

goofing around and decided to animate. Ballistic (my upcoming animation series) grand theft auto style. The guy is Trey, the kinda do-it-all guy.

For those who dont get it, he set a bomb and the job isnt done until it goes off (the GTA-style bit). basically he's just monitoring it. as he's walking off, if this was GTA, it would say 'mission complete' and the money would begin rolling in.

Jokun - Haha well you saw how big his member was he need some protection. Hehe ya I am going to erase it.

Desire - I'm not tring to show off the reason I post is to get some feedback as to what people like to see in paintings and what they don't. For example seems like people don't like his spiked sports cup so i am am going to delete it =D. As for you submitting your stuff, the only way to get better is to get critqued by other people. Leave your inhabitions behind and just show people what you like doing. There are all sorts of different styles however there are ways to learn drawing universally that I would be glad to give you link to or talk with you about.

ElectricGrandpa - Thanks. Supposed to be some kinda foiliage in the background mabye trees :).

Desire- Really great drawings desire. Keep em coming! I have done animation drawings in flash with my wacom and I thoguht it was one of the hardest things to do. I suggest sketching in either corel painter or photoshop. Also If you really want make your animals pop out you need to study real animals. Like anything worth having you have to put forth the effort to get better. The best way I would say is to set some time aside to draw animals whether it be your pet or find a picture on the internet and draw that. Also a really great book which I highly recommend is "The Sketch Book for the Artist by Sarah Simblet". What I read really helped me get past my fears of what other people think about my sketchs or drawings and what I should really care about such as composition and emotion. Also listen to something that doesnt distract from what you are doing. Like movie soundtracks, trance music, or classical music. It doesnt really matter just as long as you enjoy it. I hope I was helpful.

hey tempest i like your turtle :P

the wood looks a bit blurry, but i suspect thats just because it was a sketch and you didn't bother fill in details...

i reckon you could work on the stroke directions if you wanted it to look even better - at the moment it feels in parts (like the underside of the turtle and the highlight on his head) that its just a filter, because all the lines go diagonally in the same direction.
if you were to paint those lines (especially on the belly) to emphasise the form of the belly by sorta curving out from underneath i think it'd really enhance the solidity of it :)

:-/ Start over. Looks like the spacing on your brush is not set to 0%, and I think the black lines would look nicer if they were 100% hardness and had the size jitter set to "pen pressure."

Naw man dont start over, painting is just overlapping. Off to a great start. Just get some better skintones and try and define the nosrals. Remember everyone makes mistakes when they paint. All you have to do it expiriment with different spettings and brushes and you could come out with something cool.

A quick one. About an hour and a half with soft brush this time. Experimenting with the colors a bit and having some fun.

Thanks man. I actually just played the game F.E.A.R and some of the concepts in that game are pain awsome and feel powerful. However I did have Ninja from metal gear in mind. However I was thinking of ninja from metal gear as I was painting this. It's really hard for me to paint something thinking of color, value composition, and design at the same time it really wears on my mind. I think I just need to slow my *** down a bit and take a breather.

@Xero - what are you using to do your sketches? Alias Sketchbook Pro? Or something else? I use Photoshop to do details, but Sketchbook Pro to do the sketching and rough layout of things...just curious to see what you've been using! Nice work on that last submission by the way, love the eyeholes in the helmet with the orange glow...would be a great finishing touch on that one!

I use photoshop for everything. Mabye a little corel painter at sometimes. I dididnt really do a sketch withthe ninja guy just blotted out his form and pose then went into it with lighting in mind. For the legs i just got a random brush and sketches it out.

Ah, I was wondering what you used because some of the strokes looked smooth like in Sketchbook Pro rather than in PS. (I use a Tablet PC to do my stuff and Sketchbook works a lot better than PS for sketching...just because it's not as big of a memory eater)

Thanks for the input, keep up the good stuff! :thumb:

ophyr, thats some pretty sweet pics! I love the clean smooth lines you get, is it done in flash with the brush tool?

and what are you using them for? you said they're for a game, but are they just concept pics or do you actually animate them ??(cause that wouldn't be easy!).

Wow thanks for that post man havnt come across that one yet. Reminded me I need to work on my environments =/. As for the cmoic book style meh... I dont really like formulas to do things. Although I think I might try it out. Making fast simple paintings has always been appealing to me. Never was really into marvel or anything of the sort myself so I might need to find me some inspartion. I have always liked sparth and craig mullings style and have always found there work process appealing. Though they have a more traditional painter to computer approch then nebezial from cgtalk has. I have to admit though the comic book is faster and easier to read then working with forms. I really dont have my own approch right now I am willing to try everything to find my own style. All I do right now is start off with some random apbstractions and kind bring it into focus persay...

@Xero - Hey man, that last post is tremendous and really makes me want to know what your style of using Photoshop is...???

How many layers do you have already invested in this image? Do you follow any type of tutorials found online? Or is this all from your skill, which I wouldn't be surprised if it was your skill only.

Also, have you ever gone to gfxartist.com and posted work there? You would become an elite member in no time with work like this.

Any way I can get you to teach me the ways...I try and try to use my tablet PC but I don't get results like you are getting with this piece...any hints?

Thanks :thumb:

i love your expressive strokes... especially those black multi-lined ones near the neck - looks like a cool brush.

I kinda agree with you that a more traditional approach can look really effective. Those extra scribbles and incidental strokes definitely bring the whole thing together. I have trouble with leaving stuff that looks obvious, like the darker gray bit on his forehead, but you really pull it off.

i'd be interested to hear whether you use layers as well.

BoonDock- Thanks man.I was like you a year ago looking for tutorials online on how to paint things that look cool. I, coming from a webdesigner stand point thoguht there was a tutorial on how to paint faces. I then started reading alot of posts at both conceptart.org and cgtalk.com about anatomy, compostion, color. All it takes is alot of hard work. I force myself to do a painting everyother day. Sometimes I hate it and other times I just dislike it. All it really is is experimenting. As for layers I use em but only a couple at a time. Sometimes I just throw one on if I dont wanna mess something up. After about 30 mins I save then cntl+e all the layers because at that point I got like 7 of em floating around.

gold :P

i like the idea of not using many layers... feels more like real painting, and i think it helps avoid the look of characters "stuck" onto backgrounds or that kind of thing.
