Just a random plug for MY browser of choice, Opera. Have you guys heard of it? I've been using it for a long time now, and have to say the only reason why i use anything else is for testing web designs. :) www.opera.com (http://www.opera.com)
its not only the fastest browser in the wooorld, (more noticeable if you are on dialup) but it is unbloated, and it has cool features like it can block popups, and block cookies, and chain proxies, and all sortsa stuff.

cool! nice to see sOMEone else knows what it is.. lol. another funny thing, it supports CSS and CSS2 better then any other browser, i wish the others would catch up so the large body of inet users could see things as reliably as you do with opera. (no i do not work for them..lol)

hehe. ok b dawg, Opera is a browser, just like IE or Netscape, only a lot of people don't know about it. But it is better then any of them IMHO because it has many features that the others don't and it is also much faster and smaller. and also, it supports cascading style sheets better then any other browser, which a lot of people use now, but even more people will be using soon, because with XHTML you must use css, and XHTML is the next step after HTML, which is pretty much.. like the next step in getting better website uniformity cross browser. (basically it makes your stuff look better, and you get more similar results in all different browsers)

If you like opera then you should love AvantBrowser. It is opera, just renamed and modified. I has all the features of IE but with:

-Option Images (you can turn off the images on pages for faster viewing)

-Pop-up blockers

-Tabbed windows (an awesome feature if you look at a lot of websites at once)

-Customizeable toolbars

- and everything that golgi mentioned. I use it, Rev uses it and last I heard he loves it too. This is by far my favorite browser.

I have this, along with DeadAim, and everything is tabbed... I could have 15 webpages opened, and 25 IM and all I have is 2 windows open. I also makes your computer run faster I have found. I use less resources while doing all my web crap... :)

haha, actually I started using Opera just because of the tabs :)
Now I like Opera, because of shorcuts and some other features that I like. The only thing that I miss from IE is CTRL+ENTER.

I had Opera too, and I quiet liked it. Just stupid you always have a banner in the top right corner, unless you want to pay $$

I Like it because it was that fast.....

The only thing I like Moz more for, is that you can specify no cache, so QA is much easier.

Other than that, AvantBrowser is the best I've found so far (thanks to Jubba)...

I really like the search panel on the left (along with a searchable history & favorites tab, that allows you to search for images exclusively, news, etc.

very convenient browser. It just doesn't connect with Moz mailer, so it's hard to use for mailto, etc. It would work if I went back to Outlook, but thats not going to happen any time soon...

in response to Lynx: I was merely stating what Avant has. Avant IS opera. It is just a different way of running IE. And you don't even have to press control+enter you can just press Enter when you type in Kirupa. AvantBrowser autotypes addresses that are in your history...

Illuminae
April 12th, 2003, 04:51 PM
ok jubba. i just looked at avant cuz i've never tried it b4, and wanted to see whats up with it... this is what it says at the top.. "IE Opera" has been renamed to "Avant Browser", a final official name! So that's like weird, cuz what the heck is IE opera? so then i look around and see some stuff... and come to the realization that this browser and opera are in no way connected....
so no, i have to say Avant is NOT Opera. it is run by two different people.
heres is one of the main differences right here...
Opera didn't use Mosaic as the core, and was programmed from scratch, thus it works completely differently and the results show, wheres Avant re-uses IE. Actually it uses MSHTML and many other parts of IE but puts it's own interface.

OK, so now that I learned that it is in fact IE, spruced up to work like Opera, (cuz operas the best) heheh, this makes me a bit wary. So i figure I'll go read about who made it and the technical specs, and find, that there is in no way any sort of thing on the site where there is more specific info other then the new things in new versions, and a crappy FAQ that seems to cater more towards the general mass of users who unfortunatley don't know enough to ask other ques. (nothing mean towards them i mean, i just want more info about stuff, and where is my info??!!! wheres opera provides info even though it might be meaningless to people like my parents or grandparents who are pretty much Inet illiterate)(another aside, the way a company treats its customers like either smart people or dumb cows tells a LOT about how their products will mingle with your computer, either now or later. prime example. AOL treats its customers like dumb idiots, who need everything put out b4 them in happy colored buttons, and can set aside all human and rational thought to just succumb to the easy interface and shove-it-up-your-bum products... and AOL is the biggest piece of f***** @*&!^% garbage company that i have ever had the horror of experienceing. so.. )
ok. now that i've strayed.. plain and simple. i doubt that Avant is better then Opera, but i will keep an open mind and try it anywhoo so that i'm not one of those morons who use something even if there is something better out there jsut because they are too pigheaded to try soemthing new. LOL. plus if you guys are ranting at how good it is, i'm sure it must be. ;)

hehe. off i go. i'll tell you if i'm a convert later. :beam:

Jubba
April 12th, 2003, 07:40 PM
ok, I didn't mean it was Opera, regardless of what the website says. I know its not because if it was Opera, then yeah... um... WTF is there Opera and Avant... anyway... I have used Operan and Avant, and I personally think Avant is better. :) JUST MY OPINION

Illuminae
April 12th, 2003, 07:43 PM
oh, ok, cool. when you said it is opera, i thought maybe opera like had an alliance with some1 else or something. my bad. :)

Jubba
April 12th, 2003, 07:46 PM
yeah i know. SOmeone mentioned that by presing control+enter you could auto complete... that didn't make any sense because IE just finishes it for you anyway.... I dunno. I read the thread fast and posted faster so I may have misspoken a few times. :)

Jubba
April 12th, 2003, 07:46 PM
golgi: No, I meant it was similar. My bad. Like i said, I don't read what I type. :_)

I am currently downloading Opera and already downloaded the IE OPERA.. I will try OPERA first, since Ive been having some problems with IE. (only with one site). We'll see how it goes. I'll start with Opera.

I liked trillian, but since I don't use yahoo, or msn, and ICQ just hates me, and I only use AIM then I use DeadAIM... If you are only using AIM then DeadAim is the way to go. :) Tabbed windows and log manager.

:)

Illuminae
April 12th, 2003, 11:11 PM
what is DeadAIM?

Jubba
April 12th, 2003, 11:13 PM
http://www.jdennis.net/DeadAIM/about.php

It is an add-on for AOL INSTANT MESSANGER. It allows for tabbed windows and has a long manager. But no skins (that i know of).

Aislin
April 13th, 2003, 12:00 AM
When I was reading through the thread I was waiting to get to page four and ask you, Jubba, what exactly DeadAim was. I was hoping it was more of an all around instant messenger thing, cause I use MSN and Yahoo only. In Sarnia, basically, MSN is the goliath of instant messaging. I guess Canada wasn't hit with that AOL craze as hard, and so some cities just weren't affected, and went with the mainstream messenger.

Anyways, yeah, everybody in my city uses MSN, and AOL is like "Wha?"

I wonder if there's a deadaim clone for MSN.

Iammontoya
April 13th, 2003, 01:38 AM
Aislin, if you use both MSN and Yahoo, try Trillian. It will get you both at the same time.

Didiusthegreat
April 13th, 2003, 08:59 AM
I agree with montoya, Trillian rocks, I have it too. And not only yahoo and msn are connected, but ICQ too

AIM and IRC = *fart noise*

IMO.

:)

I've tried trillian, and I didn't like it because it was too graphics heavy, RAM heavy.

Well, it was on my old computer, and it gave me a bad impression, so *pats the new IBM* it won't be going on here.
